After getting my record player working, I went out and bought a bunch of old 80's pop vinyl. I got an autographed Wang Chung record for $.99. That's totally irrelevant, I guess, but I like to tell people because it makes me feel like a real badass. Anyway, I found an old Thompson Twins album ("Side Kicks" or "Quick Step & Side Kick" depending on the version) for $.49 so I thought, "hey, I've heard of them.. I may as well give it a try." The album is absolutely fucking great. It ranks right up there with A-ha's "Hunting High And Low" as far as 80's pop records go. After poking around the web for a while, I found out that they (plus some other guy) reformed in the early 90's calling themselves Babble doing "tribal, trance-ambient" music. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it any good?

yeah, i had it. i sold it. it's very smoothed out william orbit-esque pop dance stuff, only mr orbit does it SO much better. don't waste your money... get william orbit "strange cargo 3" or torch song "toward the unknown region" instead. you'll be much happier. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

Speaking of, I was in a bar last week watching Beth Orton perform and I didn't have a clue who I was watching until "She Cries Your Name" came on (then it really bothered me until I was able to identify it). When is Orbit going to tour dammit?

Yeah, Babble I saw that on MTV "It Came From the 80's". They went out to the Thompson Twins studio/house in New Zealand. Babble sounds like really new age shite to me, it's really bad, don't spend your cash on it, if you can even find it. Of course that was one TV show, so I guess I haven't heard much from them, but Hanson I've heard enough from them to know they are crap. Watching too much F'ing MTV, Rusty

Good? yes. Tribal, trance? no. Both Babble cd's sound like 90's versions of the Thompson Twins. If you liked them, you'll like this. She sings more than she did on their old records and he sounds exactly the same. Updated drum loops, backwards guitars, ethnic-ish synth melodies... I really love it, especially the most recent "Ether." The earlier one "The Stone" is a little more early 90's retro but still mostly good.

New age? =:-0 There's nothing I would call "new age" about it. It's pop. I'd put it in the same bin as The Beloved only I prefer Babble. 1997-08-28 15:36Timothy EdwardsI agree with Jan. It is more song oriented, kind of like W. Orbit with lyrics and a hook.

I agree with Jan. It is more song oriented, kind of like W. Orbit with lyrics and a hook. Ether is definately the one to check out. The Stone, well, I found it to be one of the less impressive Babble recordings (and there are only 2 to my knowledge). T On Thu, 28 Aug 1997 09:17:00 +0000 Jan Hanford <jan@shelby.com> wrote:
