Yep.

Yeah, but I wouldn't wanna do a live set with nothing but a computer and a fucking mouse to twiddle over. That would be boring to me and boring to watch, I bet. Additionally, somebody else said that there's this whole issue of "gawd I gotta own an xox box if I'm gonna make techno" and I agree with them that it's a crock of shit. -jimg -- skoop@slackers.net www.slackers.net/~skoop

(well, i couldn't PERSONALLY build it, but it could be done.) I write: Well I just went to the Propellerheads website to look for any updates, and it appears as if they have semi fixed this 'interface problem.' Thet are about to release Rebirth 1.5, which now includes: "At last, the days of the awkward mouse-control interface are over. Knobs, faders and buttons can now be remote controlled via MIDI, either from external devices such as synths, MIDI fader panels, hardware sequencers - or from any sequencer program on your computer. A 'learn' function allows you to do quick and easy MIDI setups for the most commonly used faders and knobs. To get full MIDI access to everything on the main screen, you'll have to follow the ReBirth MIDI Specification which will be found in the new on-line manual. Drool... you can't wait to tweak the Reso and Cutoff controls simultaneously. Admit it." Plus, they added a new 'PCF' module, not normally found on the real 303 or 808 I believe, which makes some awesome distortion effects! (hear their sample). The 1.5 update is free to cirrent 1.0 owners! Yippee! peace Nate Nate Harrison Digital Magician Inc. www.digimagician.com nate@digimagician.com 313.994.7316

that's merely a problem of interface design. i could build a box that looked exactly like a 303 but simply used the physical knobs to twiddle the rebirth knobs on screen. (well, i couldn't PERSONALLY build it, but it could be done.) personally i find watching someone twiddling the knobs on the 303 to be about as boring as a guitar solo. it's like... gee, the filter is opening... and wait, no, it's opening more, and... oh god, it's going into self-oscillation!! wow!!! i'd rather stay home and watch TV. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

Yeah, true...but until it happens, all's there is is the mouse. And frankly, though I don't know why, the concept of using a computer (as in "desktop pc", not synthesizer) to make music doesn't sit well with me. Probably because I spend all day at work staring at them...

You realize that Autechre and Aphex are using almost exclusively computers now don't you? Do you like them? markw@southwind.net

So why is most everyone on this list begging for info about where they can go to see some dork name Richard play with his powerbook? Just wondering... brock np: some really fucked up shit I just made with nothing but a 'puter, mouse and a little imagination. Call me a monkey, I don't care! :-P

why should a bunch of anonymous (to the casual listener at least) synths be more interesting than a pc? whatever equipment you use, it doesn't matter, people don't go to look at your rack. a desk and pc (and nice comfy office chair) infact would probably make more of a spectacle than a raftload of 'real' gear, it would probably do people's heads in. if you're doing a live show, the visual element in terms of artistic display is very much more important than the pile of equipment, isn't it? it seems rather shortsighted - external synths samplers fx and even mixers will eventually disappear. all in the little beige box cheerio! np - 'circuit' - heatsink \/\/\/\/\/+++++''''|||| AVANT-GARDE NOISE TREMBLING NOISE UNIT ---/\_ phabulous phreeky fone filosophy, on the way soon from salford sounds mr svinsdig, mr jones and silicon vortex to follow CIGAR SMOKERS UNITE £575 ----- --------
