I don't know the dates on either of these but at a guess I'd say DJ Food's album recipe for disaster must be pretty early - Am I mis-remembering or did it have a track called 'Fungle Junk' on it? Also Funki Porcini (there's another fungus reference for you) and his first album Hed Phone Sex had some wierdy-beardy drum'n'bass tunes on it. Chaff, Andrew C.

Actually I remember saying it in reference to Squarepusher on the list in ohhh...maybe April or May of 96? We were trying to come up with new terms to call Squarepusher's music since Grant insisted that it wasn't Jungle so I said that we should combine fusion and jungle to form 'fungle.' However, I think someone pointed out that there is a Coldcut or DJ Food track called Fungle Junk that was possibly released before that? But I never saw Morris using Fungle as a term in reference to squarepusher/jimpster/plug etc. until after I used it in that context in April/May 96. What says you Morris? I seem to recall mm referring to "triangle" musics- trip hop, ambient, and jungle around that time period in MixMag. mtim

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haha ha ha ha ha Mmmmph. Well it was another wild prediction that came true. It was obvious in 94/95 that certain idm stalwarts were starting to dabble in d+b if anyone did that first it was global communications dont forget that rdj did tracks like this years ago as well i think the first one released was the remix on Wagon X Redone EP (Rising High) I used this f-word to describe the plug eps and the early squarepusher stuff and now I guess you would have to add T-Power, spymania, and others who clearly have no intention of obeying the rules set down by the jungle dons. i also predicted that these artists would be far more successful outside the Uk nowadays my focus is more appropriately called Triangle you could imagine this as a fusion of triphop/ambient+jungle if you really must the best thing about writing for the press is the ability to perpetrate memes like this i also coined the term 'corporate house' which is gaining new currency as the mainstream DJs head ever further into a heap of overcommercialised bullshi i love my job! mixmaster morris

the big question is "is lunatic harness all that?" the little answer from me: yes and no. Yes there is some nice melodicism in this one, and some nicely done breaks. But there's also an Ed Rush style darkstep number that adds nothing to the state of the art, and some breaks using exactly the same tricks as squarepusher does on "hard normal daddy." So there it is, very pleasant and puckish in his normal vein, but I want him to take a year or two off and REALLY woodshed to come up with something new. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

Yes i think so , Im sure the Plug LP will sell far more in the US than the UK Ditto Squarepusher, you just can't keep him down,

yes I would say any track with 80 and 160 bpm sections is fair game they allow for great freestyle mixing i wouls also include ambient/downtempo tracks by junglists like J Majiks 'Mermaids' (best record on Mowax ever?) and Photeks 'Into the 90s' and things like the Chris Bowden & 4 Hero EP (hottest record in london right now) Also the fluffy tracks by DJ Trax on Nautilus I'm also into the Dot label in Sweden (but that's much faster) And the very strange Photek track on KJZ thats 127 bpm and Degos awesome 'Paranormal in 4 forms' but these are all misfit masterpieces that dont fit in anywhere the position is strangely like that of ambient techno .... i'm glad some people have the guts to make beautiful music its a pity more people don't have the balls to play it. so - we play it in the other room. its an open secret that the music in the other room is always better! mixmaster morris on now : Paul W Teebrooke LP (opART) this is brilliant

hey mixmaster. music journalist jeff salamon here again. thanks for your kind reply. sorry to bug you again, but i got one more question: those global comm eps you mentioned -- chaos & julia set -- weren't included in the discography at the global comm website. do you know when they came out or how i could find out? it would help me determine precisely what was the first fungle/drillnbass track (nailing down the month would be particularly helpful). thanks, jeff. p.s.: any idm'ers who can help with this query would be appreciated!
