I saw the White label promo or single whatever at Gramaphone yesterday. Not really into Portishead anyway. I think Tricky's alot better than anything they'll ever do. Even if he did rip from their Glory Box song, they probably ripped the sample from something anyway. Probably could start a stir on two bands which aren't IDM on who's sample is who's. They are both from an Isaac Hayes song, "Ike's Rap III". --Mark

The scoop on the new Portishead? Serious-ass sophomore slump, that's the scoop. New quasi-'whitelabel', "Cowboy," is unmitigated crap -- without focus, direction -- reveals exactly the extent to which formula without funk = useless noise. Anyone wanna find out for themselves? Copy up for trade, natch. (Although I didn't like "A Tim" either, I'm not entirely a negative bastard -- Skampler, Boymerang and Blechsdottir are currently knocking my socks off.) sr -- sd

I'm partial to that Portishead single myself. I would like to hear more of their new stuff. I don't really like live albums though-digitally mastered studio phunk suits me all the better. I also heard that Portishead weren't their absolute best live-their show at the Hollywood American Legion was less than remarkable. -d-

Who told you that? That's a load of shit. I was there, mate! Their third show ever and their first show in America. It was fucking really good, their dj spun old school classics and funky beats, beth's vocals were right on, the drumming and guitars were really tight - it was one of the best live acts i've seen and i had a brilliant time. A very intimate performance i felt. They opened the show with the To Kill A Dead Man film over which they performed the soundtrack live. If you can catch them live, do it. cheers, _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

nah, l agree w/ david, it was embarassingly bad. it had all of the elements of a bad rock concert.

irrelevant...

what about the crap mixing? "funky beats"?

and, like most shows at the legion hall, the sound was *really* muddy... i was never really a big fan of portishead, but i haven't touched anything by them since that very unmemorable evening... andy onnow: funk d'void - live cd (soma)
