yes, Tom. Agreed. Although I thought this would thread the ambient list, I'll throw in a penny to that. I find it interesting why many folks ( on this list & in general ) are so concerned with an artist *moving forward* and *paving new ground". I think Eno has done enough to the face of modern music and has influenced both the culture and subculture enough. At this point in his life and musical career he realy has no *need* to be a vanguard. What a load off of his shoulders! So much important work has come out, in all strata of the arts, *especially* music, that has not been concerned with being "progressive". While the work of say, for example, Richard Kirk has been VERY "pathbreaking" it also has had its moments of sloth, where nothing progresses. But to me, who cares? I am glad that Kirk, as with Eno, has done so much. I realy could care less if they are moving forward. I'm just glad they're *doing*. Sometimes a great CD, sometimes a loser. Did they change the face of music or effect it's future? snore..... for all the eager flamers out there.....*please* tell us all that every CD in your collection is a 100 % innovator. np: Lucid- Idylls and the secret remain bpm0@interport.net Peter Becker: Retail/Distribution Manager, DJ Pool *Asphodel Records* , PO Box 51, Chelsea Station, NY NY 10113 Phone # (212) 965-0265, FAX # (212) 965-0959 http://www.asphodel.com

I tend to agree. Apart from the general Western obsession with the "new and improved," sometimes I wonder if it isn't as simple as the fact that "new ground" is easier to talk about than--for lack of a better word--depth. (Speaking as a "classically" trained composer, we have the same @#$$@@#! problem in that world too--irritates me no end.) A concrete example: it's been pointed out that many of the sounds and techniques on Ae's Chiastic are quite similar to those on Tri Rep. (the same is true of formal procedures), from which some draw the conclusion that Chiastic is just a rehashing of old territory. So why does the later album feel so much richer emotionally? I can't answer that question in words, but if you have a similar sense of these albums, then you know what I mean. I feel similarly about the two full-length SQPr albums, which is why I'd take Hard Normal Daddy over Feed Me... if the gun were at *my* head. Of course I'm grateful for the avant-gardists--it means it's something *I* don't have to do myself! ;) J ________ \ / | Bee women: "What kind of corn soldiers are you?" H. I agree on this point as well...if you look at musical periods from the past, we weren't necessarily concerned with moving "forward" as much and as quickly in the past...the era's of classical music lasted quite a bit longer than electronica has been around! For instance, i think the Baroque period was(i'm probably off a bit here) around 100 or 150 years(?)...this would be unheard of in this day and age as a time period for ONE musical style, yet look at the depth and beauty of so many of Bach's pieces, or Vivaldi, or Handel...over the span of a hundred years or more...but all WITHIN a certain style, not stretching stylistic boundries to the extent that we do today on a regular basis. Now i'm not suggesting we progress quite as slowly as they did, but at least let's realax a little and stop looking for a whole new type of music from album to album for every given artist...
