This record is still kicking my ass. Listen to track 8 "Monochrome Dream" and contrast and compare with all the trip hop stuff that's come since. In particular, this track sounds a lot like what Amon Tobin's doing now .... MMMMM yummy. Break out those CV, Sandoz, and RH Kirk records kids. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

How can it compare to his "Dark Continent" CD ? Max.

Dark Continent seems a little less appealing to me but what do I know -- buy 'em all! --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

dark continent is by far not as funky (but still good, of course). while we're speaking of kirk, I'd like to take the opportunity to heartily recommend sandoz: every man got dreaming and electronic eye: the idea of justice. ok, they're somewhat ethno-housy, but man do they kick ass. all my kirk discs are in regular rotation, and they never wear off. kirk's just got the groove down. cheers, --tom

It's strange to me that you recommend these two so highly, since they were the releases that finally put me off buying Kirk, after being a huge fan of his work for years (check the early archives if you don't believe me). Those two were the records where it became clear to me that he'd completely run out of ideas and was just recycling the same tracks over and over - without the genuine energy and spirit his music had on albums like 'Plasticity' and 'Digital Lifeforms' - while unsuccessfully attempting to put together something new on one or two tracks (like that pitiful attempt at drum and bass on 'Every Man Got Dreaming'). For me, Kirk peaked with 'Virtual State,' and it's been a long downhill slide from there. ok ... i will have to agree with anyone who can find fualt with some of mr kirks recording the last couple of years ... you cant put out that much stuff and not have some of it suck ... i myself (starter of the CV mailing list and CV fan for well over a decade) put off buying alot of the post CV releases ... much of it is just way way to similar ... *BUT* ... i think there is a new sound peeking its ugly head out of mr kirks phsyce... it can be heard best on agents with false memories ... kirks best disk last year and one of his best in a long time (i mean LOOONG ... ) its one 60 minute piece that breeds paranoia and head nodding in the same turn ... it takes kirks amazing ability to program odd sounds with his unparalleled experience with sampling to new levels ... even i had figured it was a fluke .. somthing that came from working with a completly different source .. something that made him break his music making mold (it is a sound track to an as of yet unreleased film) ... and i just figured we would be back to the same old kirk after this release .... and then BAMMMM yesterday i picked up god bless the conspiracy ... oh my ... after constant listening for the last 24 hours or so i have to say that there is a different sound here .. yeah its still kirk ... yeah some of its still housey ... but jesus he is expirementing again ... the first song on the disk is basically sample loops and odd syth/noise loops juxtaposed on top of each other to create a very moody piece ... as much mood as some early 80's CV i remember ... i will sit down later this week and give a detailed song by song review .. but i really feel something with this and the agents disk ... somethin' good annwn

I quite like The Number of Magic. Is it just me or is Kirk playing a rather nicely treated guitar on the awesome "Lost Souls on Funk"? Got the new SANDOZ on now. It is very cool as usual; the weirdness is a little more pronounced in this one but it's not as harsh a Agents With Etc. It's probably one of the better things I've heard in a while. I _would_ say that tho' : I'm also one of the (few?) people who think "Every man got dreaming" is one his better works. Chris.Hilker wrote

Morning Star as lame dnb? hmm.. to me it seemed like a effective prefix for 70 odd minutes of bliss. D'n'b, jungle etc. can be a style an artist can suit his message to or it can be a style that can be suited to the message or artist... I think we went into this before, when Luke Vibert and Aphex were being defended from Simon Reynolds (love his Britpop rant). -- Chris Tourgelis
