just listened to Boymerang - Balance Of The Force and am quite underwhelmed. nothing really distinctive about it. it's a competent rehash of photek, no-u-turn, bukem, et al. pleasant enough to listen to once or twice i guess. in contrast, i also just listened to Spring Heel Jack ("68 million shades") and find a much greater concentration of ideas and sounds and just general niftyness. --jsd np: the pop will eat itself cure for sanity.

I can't disagree more. I found this record to be one of the deepest things I'd heard in a long time, in that style. Bukem I'd compare it to, but Bukem tracks seem not as well produced (i.e. super mid-rangey and no use of stereo) and on the whole boring. Photek is nothing like Bukem in my experience, much more jagged and minimal than Bukem, and more interesting. And Boymerang seems to be a polar opposite of the No U Turn style, which is rough, dark and agressive. So that's two data points for you poor punters to work with before you drop $25 on another import CD. Other opinions? --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

Boymerang didn't really do it for me either. The best stuf was already released on a 12"... Mind Control is the one! Wait for the J Majik album on Infra Red. That's the real deep shit____________ ¤ Forcefield ¤ http://wwwedu.cs.utwente.nl/~wielen/forcefield

aw c'mon kent, i expected more from you! that first track ("soul beat runna") is actually one of the prime offenders... it's got that sorta alex reecey "soulful" (*snort*) vibe going with these syrupy top 40 R&B-esque chords... and it just kinda mellows along for 7 mins without changing much (except to add an even more nauseating pad). i will admit up front that the sonic production quality is really top notch. totally blows away most jungle i've heard, just in that area... but it's not enough.

yeah, no argument there. but listen to "mind control" (track 2 on boymerang) and then "hidden camera" by photek. there's more than a little similarity.

oh no no no no no NO... listen to track 4 ("you like it like that") again. it is TOTALLY the no-u-turn style, except minus the big hoover bass. but the sorta washy atmospheric intro, with the SAME freaking congas from the same cheapo drum machine... and then when it cuts loose, the drum programming is exactly the same style. play it back to back with, well, any track off "torque", you'll see what i mean.

thass the breaks if you'll pardon the expression. Perhaps I've not bought as many D&B CD's as you have, but this record bears up under repeated listening for me, and I guess that we'll have to agree to disagree. Not like it isn't the first time ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Psyche manifests as psychic through something we call 'winding', because it twists, and puts things that were far apart next to each other, complicatedly, taffywise." -- winona on channel 78 Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

Eerrrmmmmm...... I like the Albumn. True there is nothing new about this release. But not much in jungle is. It's nicely executed. And has some really nice techy pieces on it.
