Okay, let's talk frankly about this 'Daft Punk' disc. I'm on my second listen now, and I can quite honestly understand all the criticism about this disc. Sure it sounds diluted, somewhat boring, and at times, simply grating....... BUT Track 7: Around The World WHAT A BLINDING TRACK! It's got that honky wonky broadway strut thang..... it's funky, groovy, sorta chewy..... I LOVE IT!!!! Runners up include "Revolution 909," and possibly "Phoenix" (the track is okay, but not great). The rest of the disc (including their video single, "Da Funk") just doesn't cut it though. And it's kinda upsetting, because "Around the World" is so unbelievably mint. It just drives me up the wall everytime I hear it. Love that bass......... onnow: a buncha daft punks (virgin) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

I have to disagree on this one though. I totally love DA FUNK. That track has one of the smoothest and coolest sounding lead lines I've heard in a track in ages. Also, I totally dig the video for that track too. Really unique stuff:) I think this album is going to be huge. It seems like Virgin is really promoting the hell out of it. When I was in Boston about 2 weeks ago, there were big Daft Punk posters on alot of buildings. I haven't seen the video..... (I live in a cable-free zone, and I breathe the fresh air!)...... but if you really want to here smooth lead lines.... drop a few hard-earned dollars on Orb's Toxygene single with that explosive Kris Needs remix. It smokes everything I've heard in the last year.... I talked to a publicist about this track, just this afternoon, and she said that DJs across the country have been going nuts about this track. I'll tell you, it totally caught me off guard when I first heard it. Funny thing is, I've been listening to that 12" over and over now, yet i haven't actually listened to the rest of the ep yet. :) As for Daft Punk being huge..... I doubt it. I don't see much of an audience for this disc. Here in Toronto, there too are flyposters wall-to-wall in the downtown area, however, the general response I've heard for the video is essentially that it's damn cool, but the music sucks. Now if only the disc came with a CD-ROM video portion...... onnow: lamb "godbless" (mercury) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

Kudos to the DA FUNK track and while we're on the subject last weekend while I was in NY I, by chance, got to see them perform at some club in the Chelsea area of NYC. Actually it wasn't a bad club at all, unfortunately I was under the impression that they would actually perform(with instruments in hand) but instead they put on an amazing DJ set for basically the whole night. They basically mixed in a whole set of their own music with the occasional PA chant(through pitch shifter of course) to the kids out on the dance floor. Let's just say they had the crowd going though I tended to move around in a sitting position on some stairs being that my girlfriend really doesn't like to dance. Anyway they definitely have that dance floor flavor and that works for me.... ;-)

for those of you interested in Daft Punk and in the states, midwest: Daft Punk performs a live PA on Thursday Apr. 10 @ Shelter in Chicago, and then they're doing a 2 hr Dj set at "We Are Family" the next night, also in Chicago. They're also going to be at "Hi-Fi" this coming weekend (Apr 4-6) in Minneapolis. And if ya liked 'Around the World', check out 'On Da Rocks' and 'Musique'...mm mm good. -zach

Wanna hear an even better track of Daft Punk? Check out 'Musique' (not on Homework). It's one measure that is repeated, but it sounds like some kid is playing with the knobs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ M a t h i a s V e r r a e s ET.Phone.Home@ThePentagon.com 'Don't expect to much of the end of the world' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

man, that track really winds me up. as does most Daft Punk actually. i can't see how you can consider them "intelligent" at all. one bar filtered and looped for 8 minutes does not equate with intelligence in my book. of course they are famous and making much more money than me so maybe they are intelligent after all. ---jsd "Sanity is a one trick pony...you only get one trick: rational thinking... but when you're good and crazy, the sky's the limit!!" - The Tick.

I agree. Their music has a dopey quality, which in its own way is very appealing, but this is not what I call an intricate sonic canvas. Still great fun, tho. The way they take a simple motif (i.e. "Musique", "Daftendirect") and tweak/filter the sample is pretty cool. Peace. J

So if we equate this to, say, modern art movements, it'd be Daft Punk= Minimalist IDM= Abstract Expressionism/Conceptual? All have equal merit and great contributions... All forms of musical expression take at least some measure of intelligence, whether it be to work the machines that create sounds, or to mold as-of-yet formless creativity into something tanglible. You have to have some smarts as to what your end product's going to be. Are you going to put out a floor-mover, or a track that invokes deep listening? Some of the most beautiful canvases i've seen aren't intricate at all. I've always been attracted to those that can push the boundries of expression within the confines of minimalism. it may be a little 'high-brow' of me to apply this to Daft Punk, but so far they're the best i've heard at at taking a simple 4/4 house beat and essentially one sample and putting together a 6 min. track that holds my interest. So i considered them intelligent, to a point. who knows if they consider themselves as such tho? Maybe they simply exist to put out floor-movin' dance tracks, and i just think too much. It's all relative, speculation, opinions. But because i think of them as intelligent, and others may not; i don't really think this reflects my own IQ. Do you? hm. You know what they say, the more complex the mind, the more of a need exists for simplistic play . I have no doubt Da Punks are an intelligent group of fellows with style and a real ear for effective musical devices, whether it be a 303 line, hi hat pattern, a tweaked sample, whatever The fact that they choose to present their artistic vision in a simplistic form does not diminish my enjoyment in the least. I think the word that best describes them is FUN, FUN, FUN. I would go far as to say they are almost nostalgic at times (re: disco?). And I don't feel stupid for liking them. Peace. James

This album is fun as hell. I'm going to say nothing about its IDM-ness (because I don't want to start another round of posts on the subject), but that said, anyone on this list with a sense of humor and nostalgia should enjoy it quite a bit, I think. -- Adam J Weitzman Individual, Inc.
