So I went to the Warp web site to have a listen to the Jimi Tenor album via RealAudio. I came away with the following conclusion: _Intervision_ is not IDM. It's lounge music. The only tracks that even marginally qualified as IDM were "Sugardaddy," "Caravan" and "Shore Hotel;" the rest were EZ-listening muzak. I'm sorry, but 3 out of 11 maketh not an IDM recording, no matter what label it's on. Why he gets any play on this list at all is totally beyond me. *shrug* -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwatch parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry

the idm definition has been laughable since it's creation. for me idm stands for good music with an electronic edge. jimi tenor is good music. it has an electronic edge. it is not lounge music. g.

Maybe it loses something in Real Audio. If your point is that it isn't anything like the traditional 'icons' of IDM, I'd grant you. But it is cool, and not, in my opinion simply EZ-listening. Tenor's stuff has live instruments, well arranged, in combination with a variety of synths, drum machines, and more traditional electric keyboards like the Fender Rhodes and the Hammond B3. Plus vocals. It's as if a squirrelly finn decided that he was the reincarnation of Stevie Wonder, and for me it's a nice break from all the people who figured out that they can run a drum machine through a fuzzbox. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "i love the smell of new carpet. it makes me dizzy. just like when you fall in love." -- Mike Dvorkin Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3488 (fax)

Now that's a pile if I've ever heard one. Jimi Tenor doesn't not stand on his own..... two artists that come to mind are The Gentle People (Rephlex) and Tipsy (Asphodel). Both are artists who embrace both the warm fuzzies of lounge, yet use loads of electronics to produce a very clean and comfortable sound. It's almost like some sorta lounge/techno hybrid, and nothing beats it. Perfect to relax to after a long day. onnow: daft punk (virgin) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

yeah, I won't argue with you about that, but I'm pretty sure the reason that Jimi Tenor is being discussed here is coz he's on Warp, which is an IDM label, which inherintly means he's IDM (IMO he is, Greg also agreed here) but it's not because he's on Warp, it's because his music is electronic music, which is what most people on this list have forgotten, and then IDM seemed to mean nothing, like Jan posted, and then others agreed, and member even said he was leaving the list. Well really, this list should be renamed to EDM, Electronic Dance Music mailing list. It would put a hamper on the spiffy IBM-ripoff logo ;) but I think that there will always be people saying U2 is crap-- people that are always saying The Prodigy is crap because it's going commercial. :I and there will always be endless arguments about it, it seems.. :( -- __ __\ \ Aurafix aka Hillie / PHD ^ DAMONES (aka Rare Guy) / /_\ \ http://www.clark.net/pub/buh/index.html \_____/ >> buh@clark.net >> < > .. >> .<>> >> > , m7= inducing mindwaves.. electronic techno muuusik controlled manually by a p h e x t wi n .. .. . . .
