Would someone mind posting a little bit more about Kim Rapatti? I own "The Mood E.P." on the Plug Research label, which I like a lot. For those who haven't heard it, the best way I can think to describe it is "after hours Detroit" -- by that I mean minimal hypnotic Detroit style tracks that are perfect for chilling out and relaxing to. Basic Channel also comes to mind when listening to that one. The only other release I know of is "The Future" on the label Dum. As I understand, Kim Rapatti owns this label. Is this correct? I haven't picked up this release yet, though. Is it similar to the Mood E.P.? Also while on the topic of this style of music, I recently picked up an EP on Chain Reaction with no artist or track info. on it. The sound is quite similar to the other stuff I listed above. I don't have the vinyl in front of me or I'd list the cat #, but does anyone know who is on this EP? I think there are 7 tracks total on it. I've heard there is a Chain Reaction CD out, which I've been meaning to check out as well. Are most of the titles on Chain Reaction in the minimal Detroit vein? Finally, can anyone recommend some similar things to track down? I heard some of Richie Hawtin's Concept series, but those went a little too far down the minimal road for me. Maybe he was progressing to something different later in the series, but I lost all interest by that point. On a side note, Synaptic Records has almost all the Chain Reaction releases available($5.99 each), so if you're interested in getting any, let Ben know. I'm currently working with them to produce a cassette sampler of the music they carry, so if you're interested, email them at synaptic@eazy.net. They also have my discography list of over 100 IDM/Techno/Trance labels back catalog numbers. Again, email them if you're still stumped on what Warp LP 23 was(or ART 4, 5, 6, etc....), but keep in mind that Synaptic Records CANNOT get a lot of back catalog, but you can email them anyway. Kim (or Kimmo) Rapatti records under the alias Mono Junk, also Detroit Diesel and Melody Boy 2000, though occasionally other people participate in these projects too. Here in Finland Kim Rapatti is already a kind of techno scene veteran, and he also runs his label Dum Records. I've compiled a kind of discography on Kim and Dum Records, and you can check it at http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb/dum.html - as far as I know, it's only one of its kind in the Web.

For other stuff with a slight Basic Channel edge on Plug Research try the 'Phthalocyanine' stuff. There is one track on the compilation 12" Plug Research 4 and four tracks on their 'Viridian' ep which I think is Plug Research 2. These releases have been a real revelation to me and I could listen to them over and over again (and have) without losing interest in their organic and beautiful unimposing, yet devastating, beauty. On 'Viridian' it states that whoever 'Phthalocyanine' are he/her/they come from L.A. Any info on other releases or the like would be greatly appreciated...

This will probably be CR-02. I don't know precisely who is on it but you can certainly hear Maurizio and some of the other Basic Channel folk in the tracks (for simple, and somewhat crude, comparisons to some Basic Channel tracks:- 1 is a wee bitty Lyot [BC03]; 2 ?; 3 is kinda like Radiance II [BC08]; 4 is sorta Q-Loop like; 5 is a little Q1.2; 6 is a teeny bit Lyot as well; and 7 might be somewhat Quadrant Dub [BC06]).

If you mean similar to BC or CR stuff:- Try the 'Studio 1' releases which are good and tend, on the ones I've heard, to be slightly almost purist repetitive-oriented. Also Jochem Paap's alias 'Public Energy' whose releases of a few years ago (on Probe I think) were minimal oriented but in a dance-floor-build-up kind of way (particularly the lovely "Velocity"). Thomas Koner who is part of 'Porter Ricks' has some lovely solo material (on Mille Plateaux these days which has a whole roster of artists that may satisfy) which fits the bill, though it is beatless. There are tons more but ... It's funny, but I was of the same opinion with the Richie Hawtin Concept stuff (I found it a little uninvolving: "all concept and no content..." {courtesy 'Quigley' 1995}) - and I really liked his Fuse and Plastikman projects too... ho hum. Hope at least some of this was of help. Rubyjune

Pthalocyanine is a singular he, a kid named Dimitri who either goes to Caltech or is still trying to get in :-) He lives here in L.A. (Orange County - near Gonzi!). All of his output has been on Plug Research to the best of my knowledge. To the original poster (Eric Frans), check out Kim Rapatti's Mono Junk stuff. That's what brought him to the attention of the Plug Research folks. - Greg
