I realize that this is all old news, but i've been away from my computer for a while...I tuned in the NPR DJ Shadow review, and i'm curious about him and the other artists mentioned, including Dr. Octagon. what's his stuff like? I'm beginning to take an interest in Mo' Wax's output, and i like the stuff i've heard so far(which isn't much)...any information would be welcome. ...and feel free to post 'em here on the list publicly, too...we could use a little more signal and less noise. itchy scratchy la la la. ----- Stewart Fritz (qwerty@monkey.org) http://www.monkey.org/~qwerty http://www-personal.umich.edu/~nee Haben Sie sich das Funk fuehlen?

Just for another opinion, I find 2 tracks to be good, most of it I'm not really impressed by. "Jimi Hendrix of the sampler" ? Ah, no.

Um there are a lot of really talented people out there in hip hop deserving of the formemost disciple crown. You're slave era references are a little bit sick IMHO. I know several straight up hip hop guys who don't mind the mo wax stuff at all. They spin some of it in with Payday and Wu Tang and all those small labels I'm not hip to.

Yeah, the stuff is real sparse without the rapping on it. Strictly underground live MPC production. Its put out primarily for djs to spin for freestylers to work over. It was created (and the scratching too) to blend with the presence of the rappers. On the original album (Bulk recs.) delivery is deadpan sci-fi surreal and gynecological. I love the original record. There are numerous other releases in the underground hip hop scene worth checking out, but the Dr. seems to have struck a chord with somehow with those that aren't paying regular attention to that scene (ie. white etc. folx who get most of their info from the media). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chris Sattinger new records coming on : Headspace (UK, feb) , Synewave(mar), Subvoice(Japan, mar), Sativae(?) the dj shadow album "endtroducing..." is the most brilliant item i've heard from mo'wax so far. it's a 9,5 out of 10. without doubt. if you've been locked away in a little dark basement the whole -96 and got out in -97 wondering what three records you should by from the passed year i'd say first of all DJ SHADOW, squarepusher and then the black dogs music for adverts. but dj shadow is probably the most brilliant record of them all. it's beautiful, it's ugly, it's slow, it's fast, it's divided up, it's united, it's great but it ain't bad on one single fuckin minute. dj shadow (josh davis) says he's doing hiphop. he is, but then again he's not. for some of the homeboys down at NYC this album probably's an anachronism, and totally unlistenable. i guess a lynching of djshadow would be kinda fitting for them homies. josh davis probably hasn't written a single melodi on "endtroducing..." (well, maybe one;), and he probably have got that 100MB sampler we all wish we had, cuz everything on this album is sampled. blacksabbath, james brown, africa bambaataa, bjork, everything has it's place on this record. and it's just so brilliant. josh davis personal grand ol master is kool dj herc (first saluted in the booklet) an old jamaican who came to america in 67 and blew away all all the other soundsystems in west bronx. he taught people that a good beat were a good beat even if it came from a shampoo commercial. this message seems to have had a pretty stong impact on the shadow. beats and beats and beats. and some more beats. probably stolen from things we wouldn't want to touch with a bargepole... it's ambient and hiphop at the same time, most people would accordingly call it "triphop". i myself looks upon it as a long, exciting and pleasant journey through mr davis personal record collection. an exploring record indeed. kool dj herc is probably smiling at his foremost disciple. the homeboys would probably want to see him rolled in tar and feathers and old vanilla ice sleeves. i want to kiss the man for bringing me a record like this. incredible and totally uttery awesome. i'm not familiar to dj shadows other releases but, you bet, i will be. sell your tv is you can't afford it in some other way. as for dr octagon, i've only heard that "instrumenatlist" album, and it's really nothing that i would reccomend to anyone. maybe an enemy of mine, but no other one. avoid at all cost or something like that. i belive it's an instumental verison of another, earlier, record, and hopefully that's a little bit more interesting, cus this "instumentalist" album really sucks major rocks. my 0.2. franz.. np. dj shadow - building steam with a grain of salt. - franz marino enmark -- http://gargamel.com/plod -- eggshell@ts.umu.se - - there's a sheep loose in the lane, there's a goose asleep in the rain -

well, we all are different right? i can't find a single bad track on the whole album. yeah, the sleeve said something about this jimi henricks guy. who is he? is he anything like moby?

ah, well, shouldn't have taken it like that. i'm not very familiar to the background of hiphop, and i don't know very much at all, and i'm sure there are ppl who don't give a shit about dj shadow stealing the music of their housegods and puttin it together with bjork. i just know that i would get pretty pissed if i heard something with someone sampling stings of life, on, enjoy the silence and mmm scyscraper i love you and put it together to a "new" song. for the uninitiated i guess it'd be ok tho. i might be wrong, but you shouldn't take it the wrong way. and your opinion is never humble, so why apologize...? chrres franz.

You may want to try some of their comps: Excursions, with music less mowaxish than usuall, more into techno/jungle/hiphop/... (Excursions is actually a name of MoWax' offshoot label) and Headz, both the original, released in '95 I?guess, then re-released last year, and Headz 2, which I personally enjoy, but some ppl find it a bit too diverse to be good.. anyway, Headz album is more typicall for what one may expect from MoWax, so it's a good starting point, with loads of phat, downtempo, triphopish stuff.. (almost a genre-defining thing, at least the original Headz) mk
