Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works '85-'92. IMO his most accessible and melodic work, the most tuneful. Probably my favorite of his. Autechre: Incunabula. Definitely their most accessible if you find Amber hard to digest.Mind you "bleeps and fx" are par for the course for these guys, but a little less so on this release. Peace. James

I'm new to the list, so please bear with my ignorance............ It seems to me that Autechre and AFX are among favorites here. I have "I care.." and only like the first, fourth, and last tracks (strings, melody) I also own "Amber," and only listened to it once when I first got it about a year ago. You might think me a fool, but I found it to be mostly bleeps and fx, it was OK-- but no real "songs." Can anyone recommend anything melodic by these folks? Or at least something with a reasonable amount of musical structure. In my own defense, I am not completely ignorant of this music. I have been listening to the likes of Klaus Shulze, Tangering Dream, Synergy, and Jean Michelle Jarre for over ten years. Some of my more recent favorites include Salt Tank, Astralasia, Amorphous Androgynous (FSOL), Optica, Orbital, Cocteau Twins, Bel Canto, Banco De Gaia**, The Beloved, Oliver Lieb**(all aliases), Friends Lovers, and Family, Syzygy, Spooky, Koxbox, Robert Miles (Don't caugh!), Moodswings, and of course.. Juno Reactor***. Considering the bands that I like, am I on the wrong list? Or am I missing something. I know that a lot of what I mentioned is more toward the side of dance music. So as a last note I will mention that I do have both Apollo comps, and like them a lot. I also like excursions in ambience 1 and 2, and also ambient dub 2. And also "...from Heaven" by Manna is a very good track from a decent disc. So considering how fond you all are of Autechre and AFX, can you recommend anything from them that I would like??? -------------------------------Izzo....

As is the case with most accomplished artists, when they're on they're ON and when they stink, plug your nose up. I'm enamored with WAP89X, specifically, Draun Quarter, which tugs at those heartstrings with gentle piano musings over a subtley funky rhythm. Of course I don't let it play to the end w/out punching a backbone of blip and bass (think electrecord - telefunken) upside it's heady structure. Mmmm nicely!

As for RDJ, I too quit the habit of leaping before I look. For me I just feel like there's more ass kicking to be done then fun poking. I mean, he's got the goods but shoots them all full of holes with superwanky sounds of slide whistles and crap of that sort. I think he'd make some killer kids albums for generation Z but we'd have to edit them down to a G rating of course. I keep hoping he proves me wrong but in the mean time there's gobs of good releases picking up where he left off and even moving forward (aka dusted rich!) Check my recent top tens -> http://beyond.hnt.com/ for the ammo. I think some 'old' school IDMers might be tickled to see a "thumpy" number up there atop the list (hood-detroit:onecircle) but hey, live and learn.

Awwwww <snif snif> I think you need a tp.refresher course. In particular I'm quite fond of my latest tape called "untitled 1/97" which features 2 cuts from the most underrated 2x12" of 1996, X-Asp on rephlex (MY GOD THE UZIQ MIX THERE IS UNNNGGGHHHH!!!!), plus selected hott-cuts from 12"'s you'll never see or hear because the guy only presses like 100 at a time (think FERENC) and some flashbacks to gescom on source (motor1 ANY1?) kao-tic harmony, science fiction, and TCM...ahh and the Voder. <chk chk> ;-) Sincere apologies for letters/tapes never sent, after a good in person visit from an old skool IDMer (hi phlowwww!) I've decided I'll try the put-up-don't-shut-up thing once again and resubbed to this noisy room. And I'm slowly getting orders filled and shipped w/regard to rorschach tekniques. One of the things I like most about IDM and Amber in particular is that it operates mostly beyond the restraints of traditional (and boring) concepts of what consitutes a "song." If you listen carefully you'll discover that it's just a structure and progression you're not accustomed to. This is a GOOD THING! We've spent the last several hundred years working western ideas of melody and harmony into the ground. Isn't it time for something new? Miles

Personally, I wouldn't call anvil vapre very melodic, except perhaps for second peng (are there two anvil vapre cds or one ? I've seen two vinyls..). Garbage is, though. Spot on. And this list is a discussion group for people who share a taste for such intellectually challenging forms of music. In a muscial sense asking: "feed me weird things". Maybe the "I" in IDM should be "intellectual" rather than "intelligent"? But then maybe not. Isn't the word "intellectual" a euphemism for (potential) "political-prisoner" in most countries? -- ____ ______ ____\ Q-Force mailto:qforce@graviton.levels.unisa.edu.au \_____ _____\ Visit http://graviton.levels.unisa.edu.au/~qforce/ \____
