Yeah, I was thinking about this a while back, and (after some
discussions with real musicians) came to similar conclusions. It's
all >technically< possible now, but the interface is a really sticky
area. Musicians are too used to physical controls, which for your
one-box studio, means you'll need some configurable controllers. The
proposals for DirectInput provide an API to do this, but I digress.
What's lacking is the will to do all this. Can you see AKAI making
their nice profitable samplers obsolete, and entering the software
market instead? Maybe Steinberg, but it'll cost a fortune, and be
pirated on an enormous scale, so we'll all get to play with it. Well,
here's hoping.

PS ObIDM: How were Autechre & the Surgeon @ the Blue Note? I missed
it due to obligations at work.
