WE - As Is Street Date: March 25 1997 CD & Double Gatfold Vinyl DJs jump into aliases like actors get into character. Some have many, some have only one. We, instead, have three characters (DJ Olive, Lloop, and Once 11) interacting simultaneously. This aspect of multi-interrelations within the DJ construct not only has more faces to to show the world, but there are also more points of view in introspection. Consequently, As Is, their first album as collaborators, yields a mysterious dichotomy, one of minimalism (peace) and ridiculous complexity (turmoil!). They balance placid, bell-like keyboards against frenetic drum patterns, languid, deep, ascending tones with indecisive beats: are We hyper jungly? are We jazz? are We drum and bass? are We hip hop? Ultimately, As Is resolves itself as muscles when being massaged--after being pummelled and pummelled, halfway through, you're somehow strangely relaxed. The members of We collaborate often and with many different musicians, Olive and Lloop are also 2/3 of the group Liminal. We have also appeared on a number of compilations, including Home Entertainment, Axiom Dub and Asphodel's Incursions in Illbient. They've remixed and been remixed by others plentifully. Aw, SNAP! I've been waiting for a WE disk for ages!! Their track on Crooklyn Dub Consortium Vol 1. still gets plenty o' play in my house. I just got new speakers to replace my cat-ripped woofers and I never knew that the fucking bass on that shit is so hard! That song is lush dubadelic typhoon in slow-motion, and the climax with the (arabic?) singing is like an aural speedball. I could listen to a 20 minute mix of the main loop alone. I've only heard one other we track on some other Williamsburg-based compilation, but the day I heard it I only had a dollar and the store only had one copy. Now it's gone. Anyone know the name of that disk? It had four sections on it, each with like 4 tracks fro NY Illbient godz. Needless to say, DJ Spooky was involved too. Was that Incursions in Illbient? I can't fucking wait until March 25. I want it now! I'm a WE evangelist! -Chris Fahey

Just picked up WE 's new LP "As Is" (on Asphodel). Just as I expected, it is beautiful. If you liked the Macro Dub Infection comps, or the Crooklyn Dub Consortium stuff, then you'll love WE. It is very carefully orchestrated complex dub with lots of really rich textures and varieties of beats. It's laid back as a dub record should be, but somehow it is still potent, vivacious, and even somewhat epic. Check it out, kids! -CF
