my review from last year: scanner "lauwarm instrumentals" sulphur on "lauwarm instrumentals" robin rimbaud has almost totally stopped using scanned mobile phone conversations in his music. the result is to the music's advantage, it gives it more focus. and scanner har really grown as a musician on this album. not content to be pigeonholed as an industrial ambient an techno musician, he draws heavily on influences of modern classical music - do i hear steve reich influences on the first track? the stunning "lithia water" contains classical strings, howling guitars and massively phat dark breakbeats. the way scanner on the symphonical "vertical line" puts a very slow rhythmical bassline, to mix different musical genres, evokes strong emotions in the listener and make the album the triumph it is. btw, that reminds me, i must review that scanner/djspooky cd... hs _________________________________________________________ you see, it's kind of like i know it's not the same thing see, there were men on the moon, but they killed 'em. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

While you may not hear the conversations anymore most of Scanner's sounds are made from samples off the scanner. He has downplayed the conversations on his non-live recordings in the interest of repeated home listenings. And the minimalist influence you hear is Terry Riley - but not samples. If you want to hear Terry Riley and big beats check out Scanner's remix of Bump & Grind. here's my review of the Spooky Vs Scanner cd, which is like an EP's worth of beat tracks and several textural "remixes". Professor Rimbaud and his equally-educated colleague, DJ Spooky, clash sounds in this first of the Meld series of collaborations between Scanner and others. Their sonic dialogue explores the beat and it's opposite throughout rhythmic ("Uncanny," "Heterotopian") and textural dubs that contrast Thomas Edison with rap MCs, African kalimbas with dark ambience ("Ngugl") and plucked violins with drum machines ("Guaxani"). The Quick And The Dead's aural dialectic would have had Plato tapping his feet and Hegel nodding his head. cheers CT
