While you may not hear the conversations anymore most of Scanner's sounds are made from samples off the scanner. He has downplayed the conversations on his non-live recordings in the interest of repeated home listenings. And the minimalist influence you hear is Terry Riley - but not samples. If you want to hear Terry Riley and big beats check out Scanner's remix of Bump & Grind. here's my review of the Spooky Vs Scanner cd, which is like an EP's worth of beat tracks and several textural "remixes". Professor Rimbaud and his equally-educated colleague, DJ Spooky, clash sounds in this first of the Meld series of collaborations between Scanner and others. Their sonic dialogue explores the beat and it's opposite throughout rhythmic ("Uncanny," "Heterotopian") and textural dubs that contrast Thomas Edison with rap MCs, African kalimbas with dark ambience ("Ngugl") and plucked violins with drum machines ("Guaxani"). The Quick And The Dead's aural dialectic would have had Plato tapping his feet and Hegel nodding his head. cheers CT
