I know Ben E King satisfactorily answered this question over 30 years ago, but I don't think the description 'soulful' has any place in discussions of Electronic music. I accept the use of the word 'soul' to describe works by Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Al Green etc. because they all learnt there trade in Church and brought a gospel passion to their music. However, extending the use of this word to describe the works of John Beltran (incidentally, love his new one on Transmat) and others is going too far. In what way can it be described as soulful? Is it the extensive use of Minor chords? Is it the large dollops of echo and reverb? Is the artist who has made the track been influenced by yer Marvin Gayes and Donny Hathaways and how can you tell? Probably the only reason for its use is to make one feel that one piece of music is superior to another. And I've been as guilty as anyone else of using it. On the Contrary My Friend....(stay with me b/cuz the post will end up with me asking about some other music) Soul is a difficult word to contend with but one thing is for sure, when you have it you have it, and others know it! Now, JB has got it....but you can tell its getting away from him, IMO.. Soul is not about Rationalizations and these type of mental games, rather its about getting in tune with yourself....letting yourself come out in your work....from gently caressing your girlfriend to art, to music........ Its not NECESSARILY a African American thing, shid Dont U dont think Nuron has soul?..... Of course he does....... Its not an act, like many purport, its a way..... Global Comm. has some, B12 got some..... U gotta first find your own Niche in the world first...then the soul can flow in..... Feel me? Has there been a part II to Prelude? np) B12 Shadow of a former self Hk!

I think _soul_ music is called as such because of the emotional involvement of the artist. Some songs/tracks you just hear, some you listen to, and some you feel and feel deeply - those are soulful. It doesn't matter where you're from or what kind of music it is, it can still have _soul_ if you think you connect with what the producer/artist was feeling when it was composed. Music theory can't explain it. I don't belive it to be a race issue either but perhaps in certain cultures people are encouraged to express emotion more so than in others - some through music. Jaques

I'll copy what I wrote to Kelley earlier: The reason I mentioned it I was arguing with a friend who was saying how great trance was. And I was saying how strange it was that a crowd who always prided themselves on their spirtuality and oneness with the world should listen to such as un-soulful type of music such as trance. And he said 'No, can't you hear it? It's full of soul?' - I said 'No, it bloody ain't, it's full of cheese'. Basically its become something that everyone thinks the things that they like has, and the stuff they don't like doesn't. So I just don't use it anymore. It's not a useful word. Unfortunately you're right insofar as most electronic music is not "soulful" (IMHO), but that's not the fault of the electronic instruments. Also, some of the best soulful music has been and still is produced on electronic instruments, but they call call that stuff "funk" and "hip hop".

This also is sad but true. This is not to say that "Soul" is a meaningless word or a definition-proof concept. It's rather like the famous definition of pornography: "I know it when I see it". -Cf ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - c h r i s t ø p h e r f ª h e y . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ chrisf@raremedium.com 2 1 2 - 6 3 4 - 6 9 5 0 x 2 5 8 http://www.raremedium.com - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think people in general use language that literally. If we did, there would be no poets, only technical writers. =) You relate 'soul' to a gospel passion in music; I relate it to passion in music. I think I see where you're coming from.. looks like you're a big soul music fan, with a big knowledge of it. That's great, and I'm envious.. I'd love to be more informed about that music. >In what way can it be described as soulful? Is it the extensive use of >Minor chords? Nah. Maybe you're thinking of blues here..? >Is it the large dollops of echo and reverb? No.. though those are two key ingredients to many of my favorite musical dishes >Is the artist who has made the track been influenced by yer Marvin >Gayes and Donny Hathaways and how can you tell? I would say yes to this one. At least for the music I was referring to originally in the review (first few cuts on the main street comp). The vocalist sings in an r&b style, plain and simple. I'm not saying he's another Marvin Gaye, but yeah, the vocal is done in that general style. The fact that the production is done (to one degree or another) by the Basic Channel crew makes it relevant to this list and quite electronic. (And an intoxicating blend to me.) But primarily it's vocal house music, which has alot in common with r&b/soul. But there are many electronic artists that I consider soulful even though they don't have a soul/r&b vocal going on. Hk already mentioned Global Communication, and I have to agree. For some reason they spring to mind.. I guess it's because their work always sounds open, honest, and heartfelt whatever genre they produce. What I've heard of Detroit techno often registers as soulful. I think it's because the music is so honest, oftentimes at the expense of elegance or technique. Listen to some Carl Craig or Derrick May.. the rhythm patterns aren't going to be complex Ae math beats. The synth lines aren't always antiseptic sequences. But in their driving insistency they are infused with emotion. Simplicity and directness -> honesty -> soulfulness. 2 cents- Brad S --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

straying away from idm for the moment... I think Elvis had some soulful tracks, as did Zeppelin. Don't know too much Elvis but Love Me Tender was dripping with emotion, and, alot of Zeppelin's influence came from Delta blues artists of the 1920s. They're definately not "Soul music" though. back on topic... In terms of idm, off the top of my head I'd say that some of Orbital's older material was soulful - I even think Windowlicker is soulful in it's own right (anyone with me on this?) I usually equate _soul_ to emotion, that's all. It's definately a loaded word and totally subjective but hey, as long as you relate to what you're hearing, that's what counts right? Music's great. I still don't see why you can possibly describe the music you like as being soulful and say, stuff like Autechre's EP7 (which I remember you saying wasn't your cup of tea) as not having soul (although, possibly, Autechre are one of the bands least influenced by black music that I can think of - although they started off as hip-hop headz). You say you use it to describe music that brings out feelings of pure emotion within you, but this is surely just the effect of the composer's tricks in putting together a series of harmonic and rhythmnic climaxes. A piece of music doesn't have soul, it's only the listener that prescribes it that description. Matt. PS. You used the word deep - don't start me off on the uses of that word to describe music...;) np.
