I just watched the AMP episode I taped from two weekends ago, and I have but one comment: The video for Coldcut's "Natural Rhythm" is the best one I've seen, of all the ones they've shown on AMP. By far. I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed with all future AMP transmissions because of this video. the basic idea in "natural rhythm" has been done repeatedly by Emergency Broadcast Network many times in the past... check out an EBN vid. (or get their Telecommunication Breakdown CD which, apart from being produced by Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto (making it a Must Own right there), has several quicktime movies in the multimedia portion). not to say that coldcut's version isn't good - i think it's *very* good... -j-

That's funny that you mentioned this. I also just watched the tapes of this show the other night, and snips of that exact vid have been running thru my mind at odd times throughout the day, forcing me to resist laughter. It's a proof of the concept that "If you repeat anything enough times, it becomes funny." This video is creatively ridiculous in that Coldcut style we know and love. The bass drum bug and the rhythmically exploding seed pods, all choreographed to the rhythm, were personal fave moments. Raises the perrenial (sic) question: Which came first, the video or the audio? 3

The coldcut single atomic moog 2000/boot the system has mpeg and quicktime versions of the video. Supposedly there are going to be 2 more singles and videos before the coldcut album is released this summer. -steve On Tue, 18 Feb 1997, Adam J Weitzman wrote:

I have the EBN videotape (the TVT one, not the band-produced original) and _TB_, and I love them both. I just think the execution on the Coldcut video was brilliant, better even than anything I have seen EBN do ("Electronic Behavior Control System" comes close, though). I beleive EBN actually makes their songs using almost only videotape sources, at least that's what they did originally. That is, they took lots of tiny bits of video and repeatedly played them until it seemed to make music. Their album is a natural extension of this. All the video imagery you see in an EBN video is the actual source of the sample you are hearing. The Coldcut video brilliantly transcends this by using footage which obviously has nothing to do with the sounds they are synched with. I've always loved the way, in nature videos of insects, they seem to add sound effects to the scene. For example, whenever they show an ant nibbling off a bit of leaf you hear a little "crksh-crksh-crksh" sound playing, as if they miked the ant or something like that (RDJ's brownnosing Squarepusher liner notes notwithstanding). The individual images in the Coldcut video seem *capable* of making the sounds they coincide with, but they obviously are electronically generated or musical in origin. Synching that beetle with the bass drum was ingenious - it seems like an EBN video, like the beetle is the actual source of the sound. The whole song/video becomes an artificial cacophony of nature TV, while EBN is an apolitical cacophony of political TV. -Chris Fahey PS - Political TV used in art is so 80's though, isn't it?

Interesting idea but it could have been more fully realized. Much better was the Chibo Matto video by bjork vid. director Michel Gondry, which I thought was pretty freaking brilliant and totally original. Gondry is probably the best person making music videos these days. BTW, on the video tip I saw the new beck video last night (directed by beck) and there is a scene where him and his band are all dressed in black with thin black ties and slicked down hair & strapped on computers and synths in a dead on immitation of Kraftwerk. _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

Yeah, I saw this video last night as well. The Kraftwerk tribute (think Man Machine) was unexpected, but definitely cool. I also loved the spirograph multi-colored effects Beck threw into the video. Of course all this glitz was balanced by Beck's messed up hair and overgrown sideburns. Overall, one of the better vids I've seen lately. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog

well.. by true EBN style, which i believe coldcut followed.. the audio comes from the prospective video clips which are editted together to make the track into an audio and video adventure. definitely check out EBN, available on video and the second album on cdrom. i've kind of grown away from there music but their technique is one to sit in awe of... e r i k @bossanova.com http://www.bossanova.com/erik/ | forget horns, bells & whistles as warning devices. they take too long to | use & most aren't loud enough to be effective. a loud scream originating | deep in your diaphragm is instant & requires no hands. | | checkpoint #10 "for safe commuting & city cycling"

I seriously doubt that coldcut made the video before the audio track, considering 1. That the video was credited to someone else... and 2. Insects do not make bass drum sounds. Besides, I would also doubt that even EBN uses "EBN style" anymore. EBN's sound effects generally come from video samples, although on Telecommunications Breakdown they appear to have cheated a whole lot and used drum machines, sequencers, and samplers and stuff. I would guess that EBN made some rough cuts on video for their performance art stuff, got a record deal, made songs *based* on their video cuts (but using regular music equipment), then recut videos to match the final song. It's impossible to get nice sound out of the crappy videotapes they use for much of their source material. -CF

I wasn't all that impressed with the Coldcut video, but it was more suited to the song than most of the videos are. The first few times I saw AMP I thought Mtv just gathered up a bunch of generic visual images to show during the music. I took me a while to figure out that they were actually music videos, which is not a good sign. My favorite video (and song of the moment) from is "My Kindgdom." Different strokes for different folks. Miccaela I just watched the AMP episode I taped from two weekends ago, and I have but one comment: The video for Coldcut's "Natural Rhythm" is the best one I've seen, of all the ones they've shown on AMP. The Chibo Matto video was pretty good . . . I'd have to say it was one of the most original ideas I've ever seen on Amp or any other video music show. It seems to me that a lot of the videos I see on Amp were just an afterthought, like someone threw it together at the last minute. I think the visual statement is almost as equally important in a video as the music. Some of the videos, are cute, like Daft Punk's, some are too glossy and commercial, like Faithless' "Insomnia," and some look downright cheap, like Tortoise's "Ice." This is a shame; the visual image should be as well thought out as the music it accompanies. Interesting idea but it could have been more fully realized. Much better was the Chibo Matto video by bjork vid. director Michel Gondry, which I thought was pretty freaking brilliant and totally original.
