First, I want to give a quick thanks to Hillie for trying to answer my u-zig inquiries. As I found, not a lot of current info is available on the Paradinas projects. This must hit his pocket-book in some way. Now, for the meat-and-potatoes... I have really liked the orchestration and atmospherics produced by Paradinas in all of his projects thus far. I first heard of U-zig through a CMJ sampler disc with Phiescope on it. I was sold. Then, I got hold of the backlog of U-zig catalog - really great work! I just listened to the entire Urmur Bile CD(Volumes 1&2). What the hell happened!? I hope Paradinas isn't content with this- I sure was disappointed. Why? Most of Urmur was composed of super-fast beats sounding like they came from a Casio $25 keyboard. Songs were "long," but for no real reason (no necessary development). Last question- "How did the music make feel?" (Isn't that what music is all about?) Like I was stuck in a waiting room after 10 expressos wiating to be interviewed by 60 executive for a job that doesn't exist! .... "And, what makes you so qualified for our important non-existant position?!" "I can repeat looped beats so quick. Reeel quick. Didcha get that, huh?!!!!!!!!" I miss Kid Spatula! There's always tomorrow...

With all this slagging of Urmur Bile Trax... I feel it necessary to jump up in defence for the few tracks that are actually really quite cool. For instance, 'Let Let' from volume 1 is one damned fine piece of work. Very smooth, quirky... jazzy.... slick, yet hardly over-produced. Sure it still sounds like video game music (like most of paradinas's tracks) but has a lot more energy than his more recent bland efforts. Overall, I felt that volume 2 was the better of the two, with 1 Hip 007*, Hornet, and The Phonic Sox taking the cake for quirky d'n b sequencing. After all, I live for this kinda lively goofiness. What I regret is that months from now, I'll have lost interest in Urmur Bile Trax.... as there it just ain't durable against the likes of Squarepusher, Plug and... well... I still get a stitch in my heart everytime i hear the Jedi Knights. Maybe Paradinas desires to be the Pete Namlook of drum'n bass? I've reserved a space for Urmur Bile Trax right next to Aphex Twin's Richard D. James album. Keeps the dust from spreading. well, sorry to break from the crowd that says this relese is crap, but I think it's brilliant - at first I thought it was a bit strange compared to the other Mu-Ziq I'd heard but it soon progressed into the usual funky-but-odd style that I love, just coz it's fast it does not mean it's not good! I don't care what you lot think, I love it. take it easy _________________ ______ ___________ ___ | / \| \| \ | | | |__ __| | | | |_| | | | | | | |\_ _/ | | | | | | | | |___| \______/|______/|______/ |___|

super-fast beats??? erh? my copy plays at 33 rpm and it has _no_ fast beats at all. -- Toralf reporting live from Friedrichshafen, Lake Bodensee, Germany.

And whats wrong with that? :P I remember someone posting about the beats on RDJ with a similar criticsm; I think some of these _less expensive_ keyboards are capable of some lovely noises (especially when put through effects :D) I just hope IDM doesn't go the way of a lot of other dance music where everyone uses the same (trendy?) percussion/analogue keyboard sounds One of the main things I like about the music on this list is the variety of noises used, almost as a feature separate from the structure of the tunes/ melodies. -- Jameel Syed ______________________________________________________________________________ http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/9798/ "it was an act of self hypnosis, a deliberate drowning of consciousness by means of rhythmic noise"
