In the new issue of Raygun, Trent Reznor cites Wagon Christ, along with Aphex Twin and De La Soul [!] as his current musical influences and preferences. Never liked Trent's politics, but visualizing him listening to Throbbing Pouch brings a smile to my face. With the current bickering about the commercial bastardization of "our music," Trent makes an interesting point in his interview. If memory serves, he's become interested with drum'n'bass and electronica because rock has become boring. There's something nasty to be said about trend-hoppers who are getting into Orbital and Prodigy because it's "the Next Big Thing," but I don't see something wrong with changing one's focus or interests because what they enjoyed in the past has now become irritating. His interview was insightful; I encourage the current IDM nay-sayers to give it a glance. One distressing sight. I was one firefly last night, and one of the server-push advertisements read: "If you like ORBITAL and the PRODIGY, you'll love UNDERWORLD. Visit tvtrecords.som" Such advertising tactics scare me. High Noon Texas Christian University Student Center 1.29.97 Dj Millard Fillmore presiding. Usually, the TCU student lounge is home to no-name folk and rock bands. Those interested in abstract hip hop should really look into Rec on the Skint label. Very different vibes. A full length should be out in February. And whoever posted about velocette is right; very underrated and worthy of more attention. I heard his live shows are fantastic. Thanks to everyone who helped me with my Vibert page problem.

The problem is that most of us realized that "rock [and Industrial] has become boring" about 5 years ago. If Trent had put out a Techno album in 1992, it would have been interesting. Doing Drum n' Bass in '97 is guaranteed to raise cries of "bandwagon jumper!", even if it *is* his current infatuation. (I'm still trying to get past the fact that the non-Dn'B bits of "Perfect Drug" sound like the same ol' same ol', and the video is still drenched in Goff imagery that I tired of long ago ... ) [ Very cool playlist elided. Musta terrorized those Christian Texans (-: ] I'm actually quite interested in this whole U.S. "Techno next big thing! Prodigy! Chemical Brothers! Underworld! OK, OK, Orbital too! And ... uh, wait, are there any more?" upswell. It seems to have appeared virtually out of nowhere. Did it really begin with the MTV Executive Decision and announcement? Does anybody remember? - Greg

Great points! It all feels like some grand experiment, with the "MTV Generation" as the guinea pigs. And it's being marketed almost perfectly, because while the average music-buying, MTV-watching kid may be reluctant to lay out 15 bucks for the new Prodigy, Orbital or LTJ Bukem, they'd probably be more willing to shell out cash for similar (albeit watered down) versions of the style from a more familiar "brand name" like U2, David Bowie or even NIN. I'm really interested to see what happens (at least commercially) with U2's "Discotheque," Bowie's "Little Wonder" and others that straddle the line between rock and IDM. Maybe next year at this time we'll see 14-year-old kids walking out of Sam Goody with the newest Chemical Bros. single in hand! It could happen! -Peter

Hold on to your seat. The next Smashing Pumkins album in '98 is supposed to be all "dub/house/techno", according to Mr. Corgan. Somehow I can't picture Billy as a trance diva... -Naylor- _____________________________________ ___ \GothCode2.5: GoSS3Mu3??$ TJtInG \___ /\ <jnaylor@indiana.edu> )_( /cDBRp7 PLShDe M3p1w Z!!GoiTeiTez C6 \/\/\__________________________)_( / \a22+ b65T H182 g5T w6T r3bs h3_/\/\/ T.F.W.O.: Totally ) (/ /s10__k2(5)__Rz___SsNy__N0993__LusIN_/ \/ Fucking Weirded Out! Umm.....This is already happening. The Chemicals are already in the process of becoming huge in the US......they are even an MTV buzz clip. I'll be impressed when those same 14 yr olds are walking out with something like Jega or Cylob. ROB
