Wait until you hear white jazz musicians use black slang. It's on it, it's live, it's worldwide. 3

Based on the responses to my flip "Anglophile" post, I get the impression that everyone seems to think I'm a pretentious Brit who resents the co-option of my culture. I'm actually a pretentious American who resents other Americans for whatever retarded reason I can think of, especially for being anglophiles, or even worse francophiles. If I had a pound note for every time I had to debunk an American's false impression that there was no such thing as an uncool person in England, that nobody's ever even heard of Bruce Springsteen in London, that British kids don't like Mariah Carey or Celine Dion or Michael Bolton - well, I'd be one rich bloke! I'll admit that most music I like these days seems to come from England, but that's not reason enough to change my bloody vocabulary! (oops!) Cheerio! -CF

Believe me, I know of lots of uncool people in England :D

Of course it is! After all, the differences in language between the U.S. and England precisely correspond to the differences in music! (Heads for exit before intercontinental ballistic flamewar begins, then hesitates to offer the following apologetic statement: Really, this rabid example of stereotyping applies quite well to much current popular music, but one of the beautiful things about IDM is its transglobal nature. Really, could anyone present accurately guess if an unknown IDM cut was produced in the U.S. or the U.K.?) (On a related note, what approximate percentage of IDM is being produced in the U.K. vs. the U.S.? My sense is that this music spawns overwhelmingly from the U.K. and Europe, like those apple-tree things in the FSOL video. In contrast, in the ambient music scene, the U.S. seems to have a relatively substantial presence, for which much credit has to go the multiplicity of recording artists claiming to be Bill Laswell. As for d&b...). (Actually, during my visits to England, I always attempted to fathom what ingredient it is in the culture, or in the air or water for that matter, which allows for the production of so much delicious music. One English acquaintance was quick to answer this question self-deprecatingly: "Bad television." As if U.S. TV is any better? Can't be that. It must be the clean taxis with polite service even, or odd. Black taxis especially are known to inspire intensely creative moods). Wheaties! Zenon M. being a long-time resident of Merrie Olde "Anglia" and having recently been to the West of the U.S. on a couple of exploratory Field Trips, I am in a position to report that the difference would appear to spring largely from local environmental and dietary factors. My soon to be published research will reveal that during the crucial formative years the consumption of Marmite Soldiers, Heinz Baked Beans and Dairylea Cheese, washed down with Lashings of Dandelion and Burdock -- and, at a later stage, what we Social Anthropologists term "Getting Well Out Of It On Carling Black Label" -- are causally implicated in the development of that part of the neurophysiological make-up that generates the Anglo-oriented musical impulse. Trips to the Outside Toilet and late-evening stop-offs (after a trip to Blackpool) in the Austin Maestro at the Happy Eater for Welsh Rarebit are also seen as potential pre-determinants. In an ongoing complementary contrastive study, the influence of regular ingestion of Peanut Butter, Juan's refried Beans, and Monterey Jack Cheese, accompanied by Diet Coke -- and later "Getting Kinda Mellow on Oregon Raspberry Wheat Beer" -- in En-suite jacuzzis and stopping off in the Ford Taurus for Burrito-Whopper-Taco-Burgers washed down with Oreo Cookie Shakes in El Pollo Loco after a jaunt to DisneyWorld are being investigated to gauge the extent of their influence on musico-Americana. ;-) alan/beyondthebristolsound PS. Late Obvious Idm Content: can anyone remind me of the title of the new Sun Electric disc which was getting rave notices a while back here and on the Ambient-list?...
