First of all... Does anyone know of any idm artists/albums that use a signifigant amount of violin or other stringed instrument samples? A good example of the kind of thing that I'm looking for would be "Into the fourth dimension" off of The Orb's Adventures through the Ultraworld. Thanks in advance. Second of all... I am beginning to regret starting that thread about commercialism in general. Seems that now almost every member of the list feels a moral obligation to put in their .02 on commercialism in a 27 page message. Some people have started trying to define art in the posts?!? Sigh...oh well (I guess I am just as guilty as everyone else) Third of all... In reference to the argument of the purpose of art, I enclose a fragment of a conversation with an artist friend of mine... Eric: What would you say if someone asked you 'what is the purpose of art'? Gene: I would probably hit him. I hope that clears up the issue on whether art is communication or to entertain the artist. -Reagan (Mainstream music is NOT a dairy product)

Bjork's Telegram has an interesting stringy track on it. Also on the single for Orb's Oxbow Lakes a band called Instrumental has completely reorchestrated the song as a live chamber music peice. It's really good. -Chris Fahey

You beat me to it, but here's more info: The track on Bjork's Telegram is "Army of Me", completely re-worked, like the Oxbow Lakes piece, with a live group playing the parts. In my opinion, it's stuff like this and Aphex Twin's "Icct Hedral" that really make me glad I spent all those formative years listening to classical at dinner with my parents. The "Army of Me" remix is really, really, good - in fact the whole Telegram...EP? Album? (It's 10 remixes plus one new song) is great, with the exeption of the first track. I don't even know what it is; I just skip right over it when I put the disc in. The "Army of Me" strings piece is track 2, tho...then the Richard Brown/B.Hannant remix (as Outcast) is next...a great slice of distorted drums that sets the strings of the previous track off really well. Other highlights on it are the completely beatless 10th track (don't remember the name), and a couple others. Bill VanLoo / dj marathon

Andrea Parker has used strings quite a bit in her work. "The Rocking Chair" is compsed almost entirely with strings and "Atacama Giant" (on the Mo Wax release with "Melodius Thunk") has some haunting chords in the background which sound like a cello or bass. \|/ @--out----------*--+what-I-got-in-my-head-you-can't-buy-steal-or-borrow /|\ -Primal Scream --Paul p. I think the first track's vocal effects (vocorder?) are amazing! I have to say that track with the raps in it ("I miss you") is pretty lame. It sounds like Michael Jackson employing Heavy D to give him street cred. But overall, yeah, the disc is pretty amazing. Stuff like that and Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor show an interesting trend in LP production. -Chris Fahey
