I was in the office, and my boss told me to make photocopies, and I as I begrudgingly got to this mindless task, I began listening to all the noises around the office. Quite soon the copier began to sound like a good loop (kind of like the "where time becomes a loop" thing..). The typing noises of the computer keyboards also merged into a melodic rythm that colored the copier looping over and over. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of IDM artists that took natural noises and sampled them in their music. I know Riz Maslen (Neotropic) does it, and I read somewhere that Howie B. sampled silence in some of his pieces, but are there any others? David

My best suggestion is anything by Matthew Herbert, especially his Wishmountain and Dr. Rockit material. Herbert's sampled everything from stapling machines to his bathtub to the percussive sounds of silverware + furniture to torn up audio + video equipment. Best bets: Dr. Rockit - The Music of Sound LP (CLR 424) Dr. Rockit - D for Doctor EP (CLR 416) Wishmountain - Video (EVO 032) Wishmountain - Radio (EVO 031) His releases as Herbert aren't as quirky but are still funky as hell.

I might be stating something everyone already knows, but I read somewhere that Aphex Twin consists of many household objects' noises. -- "I can't even be bothered Energy breaks me down." -The Charlatans

I could imagine that to be true as many of the sounds resemble metal kitchen stuff sampled at an overdrive level on a FZ-series Casio sampler (one of which is listed in the old Rephlex gear list, and the filter changes on many Aphex/AFX stuff samples resemble the digital resonance on these particular pro samplers). I remember someone on this listserv saying that Herbert did this also. A good sampler with a resonant filter and flexible LFO can let a musician make something interesting out of nearly any sound, really, imho. solenoid@europa.com <------+
