Photek - The Hidden Camera (virgin/caroline) four tracks of wonderfully dark and paranoid jazzy d'n'bish stuff. it's actually pretty interesting to me that most of the beats are barely junglish. only the last track really has that spastic jungle whirr. the others are more like jazz drumming, sort of. very cool, very original. big up. Plug - Drum N Bass For Papa (blue angel) Quite good, actually. Vibert keeps the cheese to a minimum, using it for flavoring rather than making it the heart of the tracks. Beat programming is great. Production is clean and effective. Most of the tracks have a deft jazzy touch with that 60's feel that seems to be so popular nowadays. I like it. And of course you have to love a track that samples Barton Fink. ("Life Of The Mind") Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond The Call Of Duty (deviant) Absolute most annoying packaging in the history of CDs. The booklet is nice although it could probably be half the size and still contain the same amount of material. But the music... Well, I only had a few of these tracks previously, so I am well pleased. Some absolutely wonderful Orb moments in here. Disc One is more on the ambient/wacked out tip with tracks like the marathon 18 minute Killing Joke tribal freak out frenzy and Keiichi Suzuki's Satellite Serenade (so beautiful even after a million spins). Disc Two is more on the dancefloor/pop tip with housey beats in the Sun Electric Orbital Therapy and lots of breakbeats in remixes for Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pop Will Eat Itself, Time Unlimited... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon Drukman jsd@cyborganic.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------

You might be equally pissed off had you bought the vinyl. Gatefold sleeve, quad vinyl, aquamarine in colour, pretty decent pressing quality, top music, but NO BLOODY BOOK. Good morning, campers! Here's some good news (for me, anyway) : There's a record shop 2 minutes from my house which I've never been into on account of the sign outside, saying 'indie rock metal' Anyway I see an advert for the Enforcers triple 12" hardstep comp and its a big list of shops where you can get it, and one of them is this very record shop. So I go in, and what do I find - a great big dance section including at least 2 feet of dnb vinyl - Hooray! So here`s some of the stuff I picked up: The Bowling Green - The Mingle EP Excellent Drum and Bass inna IDM stylee. More interesting the Plug, less frenetic the SquarePusher with killer doo-wop vocals - you guy's would love this one. Does anyone have a track list - I think mine must be a promo white or something. U.N.K.L.E - The Time Has Come EP - Mo'Wax This is a rerelease, right? Anyway its got two great plaid mixes full of scratching and smooth plaidy melodies, and a cool Portishead mix featuring more scratching and searing electric gee-tar. F.S.O.L - My Kingdom EP. The A side is frankly, dull. What a dissapointment, a boring beat and a repetetive flute sample. The B side is more like it - a mixture of ISDN and Lifeforms elements. Tassilli Players - Outer Space LP - Universal Egg This is good one. I got a bit bored of Zion Train's electronic dub excursions but this one had such great song titles I had to buy it - 'One Giant Dub for Mankind' 'Deep Bass Mission' etc etc. Its cool though - good minimal deep dubbiness lots of wierd echoey noises i.e nothing unexpected, but still nice. you poor twisted child :) I was also expecting this to be a full on drill 'n' bass release,

Port Rhombus has got to be my Favourite Squarepusher track, but i have to admit when i first heard it (came out last summer?) i thought 'hmm thats nice, not as good as the album though'. This one grows on you incredibly, i listened to it everyday for about 5 months, the bassline is incredible and the percussion is mad (although not mad like the album... different mad!) just keep listening is my advice :) kF

Hi, Splurged BIG today on quite a few a musical items, including: Urmur Bile Trax cd Port Rhombus Atomic Moog 2000/Boot the System/Natural Rhthym Orblivion Star Wars Boxed set of 4cds containing all the scores and unreleased scores. + a few more cds. Anyhow a few comments i'd like to make: The coldcut cd is great as usual, but the cdrom portion, ie, natural rhythm is phenomenal. The seemless integration of video with the music because the two were done in conjunction with each other is brilliant. I'm actually surprised this hasn't been done more often before. I can remember seeing Amiga demos that had all the coded effects timed to the music which made them so much better, imho. A big up to the coldcut boys and ninjatunes. Urmur Bile Trax: I was expecting this to be a lot worse than what it actually is due to all the shite going around on this list about it. It's much better than the Port Rhombus ep by Squarepusher (who's full-length is brilliant!), imho. I was also expecting this to be a full on drill 'n' bass release, due to list heresay.. it's far from it. Oh well the rest will get reviewed sometime later. Though..

I think that it's a nice companion, all be it a lot more jungly in places to his earlier work, and considering that it's basically remixes of earlier tracks it's not surprising. I quite enjoy listening to it, but will it stand the test of time... maybe not. Though only time will tell. I'm glad I brought it though. I'm off to hear the Orb.. :) Regards, John

I've had the same experience with this release - I listened to it a few times and then thought, "well, 'Tundra' it's not..." But upon dragging it out the other day, I really enjoyed the bass playing and the melody's quite engaging. Well worth the repeated listenings. GD

Has anyone else mentioned the (new?) Icelandic project Mum? I got a 12" of their's a couple of weeks back and was really impressed by the combination of fragile electronics and female vocals (reminiscent of The Cranes, at least to me). I found their full album - "Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK" - available for a very reasonable price at Darla mailorder (www.darla.com) so I ordered a copy and received it yesterday. Surpisingly, I found only one track with vocals - the same track that appears in several versions on the 12". But it's still a wonderful record, very pretty and clean. I can see this getting a lot of plays as the weather gets nicer, it's got that vibe to it. Apparently both releases are very limited and won't be repressed due to the band signing to Warp, so grab then while you can. I was also pleasantly surprised to recieve an envelope from Skam in the mail containing the new Bola EP. Unlike a lot of people, I sort of dug the Wevie Stonder record - a little goofiness every once in a while is OK by me. But it's nice to see a bit of the "classic" Skam sound come back. Great use of an MC on the first track as well. There's some new elements in the mix, but enough of the old Bola sound that fans shouldn't be disappointed. Finally, I see that Max Tundra has a new 7"/CDEP out this week on Tugboat. Anyone checked it out? It's been ages since his Warp single, I'm curious what he's up to.
