Hi,

What!? Kraftwerk were singing on the majority of their releases... it's nothing new. How about the Lidia Husk (sp?) and Beaumont Hannat collaborations? He's just bring the music inline with the pop asthetic... what will be interesting is how it will be received, and basically that depends on his music (no worries :) and his singing voice (only time will tell :).

What? I thought RDJ was the first person to combine singing and music...In fact, didn't he invent music? ;) khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

It all started out with the human voice and it will always find its way back. A few artists are ahead of the trend here -- too many to list. You might want to look into the last 2 Underworld albums, for example. A lot of discussion has been about their remixes, but I think the albums are the core of their material. Or if you want to take a step way outside the IDM arena, how about John Cage/David Tudor _Indeterminacy_ from 1959? --Mark __ http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome "The fact their parents have separated doesn't disturb the children. They go on looking at television. How old should they be before they smoke marijuana? No one seems to know." -- John Cage

I received my copy of the Boy/Girl single yesterday, and I felt necessary to clear up a few things about this vocal thing. While Richard has certainly taken a flying leap in the drum'n bass genre by adding 60's slacker lyrics (the comparison to Syd Barrett is dead on) his writing process is still the same. There are three lyrics to the boy/girl song: "I wish the milkman would deliver my milk in the morning" "I wish the milkman would deliver my milk when I'm yawning" "I would like some milk from the milkmans wife's tits". He's quite obviously sampled these three sentences, and then encorporates them into a rather clonky drum'n bass rhythm (polygon window meets squarepusher). Towards the end of the track, he gradually processes the lyrics until they're practically indecipherable. Mind you, by then yer sick of it anyways. It's cute...but not exactly your standard top of the pops success story. In the meantime, I guess Richard won the bet. :) Richard also sings on "beatles under my carpet." Something like "Bee-tles...uuunder my caarpet, under my feeet. They come out in the heat." Actually, I'm not sure but I think "Aria with Fontana Mix" was earlier than Cage's "Indeterminacy" piece(s) :) so this might be the "1st", and obviously, Aria is w/voice. If you like Cage and Tudor, you should get your hands on a performance of "Toneburst" by Tudor(+ the "score"), I just saw it last week, its incredible. take care and e On Sat, 21 Sep 1996, Mark Kolmar wrote:

Why doesn't someone put some samples up somewhere? For real though, if someone mails me some clips (.au, .wav, whateverz) I'll put them up on my server. If Greg won't kick my ass that is. Just be sure to let me know first before you send em. Peace out, '[=]---' {_{' resh "West Coast Killa" Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA
