Hi all, I'd hugely appreciate any reviews for the stuff listed below... I know some of it has been discussed on the list a while ago, so if you feel this is the case, maybe you'd rather want to email me privately - but please jam my mailbox with reviews! Also, if you have any of this and want to get rid of it, feel free to hawk it on me... :) thanks in advance, tom blue mexican church funki porcini love, pussycats & carwrecks hardfloor home run herbert 100 lbs. Housey stuff: the gimmick is he samples cutlery and other household objects. Nothing on it is as potentially offensive as his "Royal Wedding" on the 'Theory of Evolution' comp, but this keeps anything on it from being terribly exciting, either.

Blah. A mediocre record that took ages to record. The Stone Roses of techno, indeed. Get 'Frequencies' if you don't have it - it's a classic.

It's not received any really hostile reviews on the list. I'm waiting to pick it up used (if there's one thing you can set your watch by, it's that MBM albums always show up in the used bins, sooner or later).

Judging from the comments I've read, it's more puerile, overhyped trash from these two. Lately it's hard to believe they're actually the same guys that made "Sick Porter (Remix)" and "Polygon Window."

Domestic on Astralwerks (US). Now making the used-bin rounds (and not without good reason).

Yikes, I'd be a little more generous with this one.. if you listen closely the "radio play" actually describes in words what's happening to the music, ie. "oxygen supply is low, reduce cut-off frequency to 30%" [corresponding twiddling of cut-off frequency], that kind of thing. The latest Single Cell Orchestra release is also quite good, although in a completely different way (no subplots, not quite as dark and ominous). Cid.

There is some stunning junglish music on that disk, and some of the ambient passages are pretty interesting, but for my money I'd rather have the 3 or 4 tracks with beats on an EP. I'm not at all interested in the store on Reload's "A collection of short stories," either. To the extent that there CAN be some sort of mixture of music and drama, give me "Showboat" any day. The problem is not the intention of the musician, it's that they have a friend who does a little writing and they put things like this together. In my little town they have a radio show several times a week where author's read their work at a local bookstore (Town: Iowa City, Program: Live at Prairie Lights), and the sound of real, serious writers reading their work can be very compelling on it's own, without someone messing with the filter cutoff knob. But to date the electronica/fiction fusion thing is real weak on the writing side. By the way, if you're in the US, check with your local Public station; I believe 'Live at Prairie Lights' is syndicated through PRI or NPR, and you too can be getting this stunningly good radio program. This is not just lame dweebs flogging their books, but the cream of current writers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I read Keyboard, but it's like staring at a book with pictures of simple looking but expensive machines." -- Michael Lazarev NEW CD Comp Electronic Music Project http://soli.inav.net/~kent/emp.html Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

I find this album brilliant and luscious in the 4 AM house style. I hear from people who are not impressed, but drag your boombox into the bathroom, draw a bath, get skint and put this on. It's magic.

Cool when he actually fires that sucker up. Metallic abstract D&B. I don't care about the storyline, and it's pretty murky going. If you want a radio play with music, dig up "Roller Maidens from Outer Space" by the Firesign Theatre guys (David Ossman and Phil AUstin).

This 2LP is a mixture of brilliance and utter confusion. The tempos are all over the place often times within the same track. This makes much of the record useless from a djing perspective. The motif is jazzy with the beats dubby bouncing to breaks and backagain with brief stops in the 120s. Songs like _purrfect_ and _venus_ are so trance-inducing. Other songs are way too frenetic for my tastes but overall its worth it.
quoted 1 line Sabres of Paradise "Haunted Dancehall">>Sabres of Paradise "Haunted Dancehall"
This 2LP is totally a totally amazing concept album that really holds together as a cohesive piece of work. Dark and Spooky with most beats below 100bpm. Songs like _Tow Truck_ and _Wilmot_ are so funky and dark. At times a bit noodly and treble heavy. I thought it one of last years best lps.
quoted 1 line Sabres of Paradise "Sabresonic">>Sabres of Paradise "Sabresonic"
This mystified me. Why warp reissued it is beyond me. Put the new stuff out and leave old tunes rest. OF course musically it is really tight. The style is much more trance and much quicker than "Haunted". It has several tunes which I consider to be all time classics of the warp sound. If you don't have I by all means get II. Did Warp reissue it in the current incarnation or did the Sabres *tell* Warp to reissue it that way? cya brian
