So did anyone hear sickness/recovery on the net? Saturday night all they could come up with was the +8 logo, 3 words: "delayed 10 hours", and a pointer to "Directions" which recursively pointed at the same page. No explanation or expected broadcast time necessary here, I suppose. Sunday around noon I checked again, still the same crap. By sunday evening the regular site was up again. Anyone go to the real party? I hope it wasn't "delayed 10 hours" also... Well I'm assuming g3 means keep the Real Audio installed. If that's what he means then I agree with him. Don't let postponed Real Audio events keep you from enjoying other sites that have things up and running. i apologize for the seemingly un-listy-nature of this article, but if you think about technology as a tool to free us from the constraints of the music biz, then you might find it more relevant. i personally have dreams of when i can check out the best in cutting edge idm over the net... streamworks uses MPEG, which is an open and well-documented standard. there are numerous shareware and freeware mpeg encoders for various platforms out there. on my sounds page (http://www.cyborganic.com/people/jsd/sounds) i have a link to a good suite of tools for the power macintosh. the only problem with mpeg is that you need a fast CPU to decode at full quality in real time. a pentium or power pc can handle it, no sweat. but a 486 or 68040 might not be able to get to full 44.1/16bit/stereo levels. one of the other great things about streamworks is that it will scale back its streams automatically in order to work best at whatever line speed it sees.

I am still running a 68030 Amiga; prob'ly some of you programmers esp. in Europe have one also. I downloaded a 4 or 5 minute track by Severed Heads a while back, and it took over 12 hours (!) to decode to AIFF. A 68040 is maybe 8x faster, but even so... (Maybe time for a new computer, eh? I've grown quite fluid with the old sequencing software, though -- the learning curve would defeat the speed advantages for a while) As I just told Jon privately, his track survives reasonably well in RealAudio 28.8. I think it was Derrick May I heard do a set a few months ago, and it also was sparse enough to survive. On the other hand, I tried to encode part of one of my tracks, very dense as many are, and it came out like digital hash.. A handful of grainy, 22KHz/8-bit files of some of my industrial-noise- techno-rock material is available thru the URL below. None of the heavy techno-ish stuff is represented yet, but that's coming up soon. I was eaten alive by mosquitos. On the balance, not a bad tradeoff. My guess as to why there wasn't a netcast: the party happened in the middle of some farmer's soybean field. Big wet soggy soybean plants. A fair bit of mud. No ISDN cabling. I think this was their fallback site. Anyway, I wouldn't have wanted to be the person in charge of trying to manage a mutimedia webcast from a farm in the heart of agrarian Ontario. -d.w.
