"Definitive" as in ...? Born in the Belgian club scene in the lateish '80s, drove everyone crazy when it first started, heavy sexual imagery (check out some of the track titles!), slowish BPMs, the direct offspring of the more melodic side of industrial dance and acid house. Didn't last too long, mostly because there wasn't enough innovation within the scene to keep it going, but there were some good tracks. People like the Lords of Acid, Praga Khan, and as someone else mentioned, F DeWulf, came from the new beat scene. For what it's worth, I see goa trance as a direct descendant of new beat, both in terms of overall style and philosophy.

Nah, there were a few Spectrum releases on R&S, most tracks being popular enough that they wouldn't be able to closet them. Spectrum were ambient-electro stalwart Morley and Marcos Salon, aka Outlander, and were also responsible for TZ4. eric

There was a series of albums out on the Subway label called "New Beat - Take x" with x being an integer from 1 to 5. From memory the genre was started by someone slowing down a track by the industrial band A Split Second. To my mind it was basically slow euro disco. Although there was a multitude of bands when you look at the credits it was really only a handful of producers. Inger, Khan and Van Oekel and Morton, Sherman seem to be the most prolific teams. It is quite funny to see how many of the producers reappeared years later with the hardcore techno scene. If only they'd moved the pitch controller the other way. Interestingly, the producer of a track "Total Recall" by the band Spectrum is listed as David Morley. Can anyone confirm that this is the David Morley who recorded for R&S? A skeleton in the closet perhaps. Steve

Half of the so called New Beat artists were the same few producers under different names. Some of that shit sucked so bad, but there are some good tracks that flew under the new beat flag. Here is a few New Beat tracks that I am not afraid to admit I liked/still like somewhat Jesus Loves the Acid-Ecstacy Club Acid in the House-Miss Nicky Trax 20-Acid to body I sit on Acid-Lords of Acid (I will admit it, I liked it a lot when it came out, go ahead and call me a sucker :) ) Frank de Wulf-Acid Rock (back to that Frank de Wulf thread) Pluto-Isn't It Crazy Rythym Kings-A La Recherche du Temps Perdue Out of the Ordinary-play it again Technoid-technoid

AMEN!!! Goa should die about as quick of death as New Beat as well, or maybe the more original sounding goa stuff will mold into something different. Stinky fingers

Don't forget about the aptly named "Brillyant" from Boytronic! Also "mmm-mmm" from Taste of Sugar, and Code 61's "Drop the Deal" (if one can call that last one New Beat). Best, Zenon M. Feszczak Semi-literate Philologist
