Yes, Lawrence Welk was ambient listening. Heck, he was even a drug pusher! hehehe! Oh yeah, Cissy and a Bobby showed us the latest hardcore dance steps. BTW, as a child, I used to sit and watch that show with my grandmother on Saturday evenings--it was the *only* thing on. Be thankful if you're growing up in the '90s. One of the side benefits of being a second cousin of Nelson Riddle was that when I was a wee sprat I met a lot of the evil entertainment spawn of LA, including Mitch Miller, who really should have been a Hell's Angel. And while we're on the subject of LW, let us not forget the inimitable accordian styings of Myron Floren. Before there was slam dancing there was the spectacle of tipsy farmers cracking their date's ribs as they polka headlong into the cinderblock walls of midwestern dance halls. Big up polka massive! This is the bomb! I'm starting a "Polka Crew" in Tucson. Polka is the coolest thing since gregorian chants. If anyone is interested in joining my new P.M., e-mail me. (Accordian players needed!!). Ahhh yeah! The lover is in the house! Glad to see some old skoolers talking about some _real_ "originators", unlike MBM. Great, now the legacy of threads continues..., but seriously, MBM had nothing to do with electro, unlike the Egyptian Lover. He rocks. Don't get carried away! Egyptian Lover is good but he is not the end all of old school electro. In fact he uses the same formula for almost all of his songs and they start to all sound the same. Has anyone else ever noticed that the instrumental of Livin on the Nile has been plagerized almost identically by Bandulu on Downward Glance. Incidently they covered this topic in Under One Sky several years ago, does anyone know their url for their web site? Some tracks that made the list as influential electro on techno are as follows. c.o.d.-in the bottle-emergency records jive rythym tracks-jive warp 9-light years away Paul Hardcastle-Asylum Key West-Kasso Slack-Slack One more shot-C Bank Funky Soul Makossa-Awesome 4some Nonline-IMS any how about Mantronix, they did a lot of futuristic cuts. They best of Hip Hop on Low Price Music is an awesome collection (4 cd's) of some of the most influential and sampled early hip hop and electro cuts. It is too bad this is not on vinyl! derek

Mantronix is definitely one of the electro pioneers in my book. I'm glad you mentioned them, since they seem to get little credit today (granted, they did turn into a cheese-ridden r&b group later in their career 8( ). Anyone out there who hasn't heard "Bassline" from their debut self-titled album, should check it out. Try to get the Bassline 12" if you can on Sleeping Bag records also. The B-side has the instrumental version, which is still great to listen to, since you can bypass the sometimes irritating raps of MC Tee and stick to the electro grooves of Mantronik. Also recommended for anyone thinking about delving into Mantronix is their album _Music Madness_, which has some choice cuts. +----------------------------------+ | Eric Frans | | franse@bigdog.engr.arizona.edu | +----------------------------------+

I have to agree on this. They had a pretty cool logo too.

Again, good choice, but note however that there were several Mantronix bassline 12". For example, one is called "Mantronix bassline the 12 inch" and has an additional indication: "stretched". This has an extended version of bassline, an instrumental of ladies, ladies remixed and get stupid `fresh` part 1. No bassline instrumental... Ciao,

How many Bassline 12"s were there exactly? Mine reads: "Mantronix (the 12" single) - Bassline" on the spine. The A-side has "Bassline(Club version)" and the B-side has "Bassline(Instrumental Version)" and "Bassline(Radio Version)". Chep (Bad Boy) Nunez edited it and it was released in 1986. +----------------------------------+ | Eric Frans | | franse@bigdog.engr.arizona.edu | +----------------------------------+

MAN! I should actually read my listmail more often! I havent heard anything about the early 80's jams in a longg long time! I had at one time a grand total of four different versiond of bassline including the LP... Do you like,,,MANTRONIX...hell yeah.. Frag, man...thems was the good ol days... Plus EGYPTIAN LOVER! I had every lameo lyric mesmorized as an impressionable youngster. Me and my pal Dave would have flown to china to get those 12s... I once called EErecords and spoke to the dj joe cooley abd a couple of other guys and begged for the old 12s...They sent me ALL of them for 3 bucks! That included all the jamie jupiter stuff and the girls remixes and a couple of uncle jamms army 12s. lately tho, Elover has bit the big one. His last decent disc was Pyramix... The Filthy CD and the other new crap pretty much sucked. I dontknow where dude lost his edge. All his partners flew the coop too, Rodney O and all those guys... Man...what went wrong!? If you want to coooome...come to....my house.... Later all, I'm taking a trip to the Alezby Inn!!! Jasonosaj P.S. Thanks for these memories! I have a tear in my eye.
