Just couldn't help adding 2 bits. My bias up front : Jack is the fucking bomb! No, he didn't invent "Jungle" or "Techno" all by himself. But tell me who, brought hip-hop beats and british techno together first ( along with a healthy dose of noise ) ? Of course he followed this up with the best ( & maybe the first, I don't claim to know ) use of a reggae bassline in an electronic dance song ever. So I say Jack D 1. brought hip-hop beats into electronic dance music 2. brought reggae basslines into electronic dance music. 3. is not industrial just noisy dance music 4. did indeed tempt many an industrial lad & lass to dance 5. plays the bass clarinet himself on SS instead of sampling it. -PT23 on now : Squarepusher "Feed Me Wierd Things"

You could just as easily be talking about Tackhead, of course. This isn't a flame, of course. All I've been thinking during this whole thread: "When you dis Jack, you dis yourself." C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker)

Yup. And I pity the fool that disses himself. To tell a fact I don't own a single meat beat record. I may have to go find one. That new one sounds yummy. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check the lame home page http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

Mark Stewart... ...who is of course one of jack's biggest influences (I hate to say considering I'm a huge MBM freak). Forgive me Jon. It's blasphemy, and as for me... esod. .-. qp; christopher miller == evil@digital.net ' on now: "Subliminal Sandwich" by MBM

Mark Stewart, yes! Parts of his recent album, _Control Data_, sound like Underground Resistance run through a blender. Trent Reznor couldn't get Adrian Sherwood (Mark Stewart's collaborator and co-producer), so he got Keith LeBlanc (another Sherwood/Stewart collaborator) to produce his first album. Several remixes of tracks from _Broken_ and _The Downward Spiral_ are clearly aiming in the direction of Mark Stewart's 2nd album _As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade_. While playing this album a few years ago at college, one of my roommates left, telling me "this music causes brain damage!" Look into it. Comes with my highest recommendation. It's on Mute so it may not be easy to get but is always in print. -- "We invented machines in order to reduce our work. Now that we have them, we think we should go on working." -- John Cage On Fri, 7 Jun 1996, Christopher Miller wrote:

Sherwood did coproduce "Down in It" with LeBlanc. LeBlanc only actually worked on three or four songs on that record, "DiI," "Head like a Hole," and one or two others (one of which he only mixed, if I recall correctly). C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker)

Whilst I agree that MBM are worthy of praise and did have a major influence with tracks like "Radio Babylon" and "Helter Skelter" please don't forget the influence of Renegade Soundwave (tracks like "Cocaine Sex" and "The Phantom") and Depth Charge on UK dance music at that time. Steve
