All this talk of classic breaks has got me thinking... Does anyone ever make their own breaks using single shot sounds out of a drum machine? Me and a mate sometimes get together and make tunes, and we had a go at some jungle but the beats ended up sounding pretty poor and repetitive. I reckon to get anything like the complexity of the breaks in say a Photek tune out of single shot samples would take forever. So do any obsessives actually do this, or do they all work by sampling and rearranging existing breaks? Anyone know/got any thoughts? Cheers Andrew C.

You can cut and paste MIDI data. Depending on how your sequencer works, you might be able to put together a few short sequences which are in themselves not a continuous beat, but can be layered together to create different beats from different combinations. You can even process the audio to add grit and grime. I've never sampled a snippet of drumming any longer than about a second or two. To some extent I keep myself ignorant of jungle and d'n'b, so that only the -idea- of jungle and d'n'b influences me, not others' work. --Mark Kolmar

Jungle is cutting breaks, but there are some who will add machines in the mix or sample a self-programmed loop and chop that up. eric

My friend had a suggestion, I haven't tried it myself yet but it sounds pretty smart: Sample or copy a hip-hop or jungle drumloop, a rather long one. You can also use live drums that you yourself play and chop those up too. Isn't that what Square Puhser does?
