Greetingz, back in Germany i just had to grab a lot of new and old vinyls that came out while I was gone. * Concept 1 - 3 ... I know, not new to many of you... well, am happy that I got them here.. they had plenty of copys... I like 1 and 3... they are usefull for the clubs and it's fun to mix them. I might say, that ther sound seems a bit like a mixture of Basic Chanel and Jeff Mills, but who cares.. it's dope! * Chain Reaction 4 & 5 I agree to reviews I've read before. 5 is the best release since #1. 4 is for the archive of stange but good records. * Transmat Classics: Psyche "Crackdown"... (MS-12) How nice of Transmat to rerelease the good old stuff. Can't wait to get copies of the Rhythim is Rhythim records. BTW, on the Label Astro-Farm (seems to belong to a club in the UK with the same name) I found a copy of "Strings" (AF001, neet pink cover). * Tresor 43: 313 4 Track EP compilation with Santone "D-Tech", Blake Baxter "Luv 2 Luv", XZILE "Blind Faith" and DJ At Will "Don't stop" All kind of typical Detroit style. I like Santone and XZILE most. and BTW, I've also seen a new Eddie Flashin Fowles Cd and the Christian Vogel album (both on Tresor) * M-03: Unreleased Blake Baxter The Label says: Domina - Maurizio Mix and C.Craig's mind mix ... but that's not what's on it. According to the label the used a unreleased master with Blake Baxter tracks by mistake and pressed a few hundret like this. I don't know if its a pure Blake Baxter or a Blake Baxter remix of Maurizios track. On the vinyl it says "Mixed by Pump Da The Bass" on the B-Side and "OBGB" on the A-Side. Does anybody know anything more about this record? take care! This thing is technically a cover version, called "Strings (ain't what they used to be)" which has been done by Ashley Beedle. J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - steady-j@firefox.co.uk

*** News from the wicked world of techno-house **** --------------->>>> New Vinyl <<<------------------ * Christian Vogel "Body Mapping" (TRESOR 45, 1996) Christian's new album as an innovative mixture between techno, house and experimental/progressive styles. Very refreshing. It's wild, crazy, minimalistic and groovy with a touch of soul. It's a pleasure to listen to it. 9/10 * Missing Channel Submerged (Hardwax, HX-008, 1996) As I tried to get Robert Hood's new THE VISION release on Metroplex, I was informed, that this 12" is also made by Hood. And yes, it's sounds like him but there is more house in it as on his M-Plant releases. It's even FUNKY! 8/10 * M6 (Basic Channel, 1996) Maurizio is continuing is way of M4, M4.5 and M5. A phat groovy house-beat with minimal changes. Good as always but sooner or later Maurizio should develop some more variation. His releases on Main Street are more interesting. 7/10 * Vainqueur "Reduce 1/2" (Chain Reaction, CR-06, 1996) After the great CR-05, this is another good release. Minimal techno-house in the known BC style and it's not too strange to play it and to dance to it. 8/10 * Vainqueur "Elevation" (Chain Reaction, CR-07, 1996) This vinyl is another one for my chill-out collection. While CR-04 Monolake had a least some mimal drums, this 12" goes without any. So sit back an relax. 4/10 * S.R.I. "Grand Slam" (NTA 010, 1996) Another release by Sweet Reinhard (Profan/NTA), the brother of Mike Inc. On the one hand typical Sweet Reinhard style (somehow funky) as you can hear it on his Profan-Releases and on the other hand some new elements like electro. 8/10 and finally I got my copy of: * Jeff Mills Mix-Up Vol.2 (Sony, 1996) What a pleasure to listen to this document of mix-culture. It feels like being there live and direct with him, watching him working. The best mix-cd I've heard until now. 10/10 that's it for today... tomorrow I am on a Profan-Label-Party in Cologn with Mike Inc. and Sweet Reinhard. **** New Vinyl **** Yanu "Hatdance" EP (Direct Beat/430 West, 1995/1996, DB4W-012) 3 Tracks Starting to write this review, I realized, that this vinyl wasn't by Aux88, as I thought. I should take a closer at the label next time. At least I understand now, why it doesn't sound like Aux88. "Fractal" starts off in a nice pecussive, tribal way and get's harder and wilder at the end. I like the first half. "Crazy" is a straight 4 on the floor techno track. Boring. "Hatdance" is really more for your head. Experimental. Nice. 5/10 Will Web "Extraterrestrial Phunk" (Direct Beat/430 West, 1996, DB4W-14) 3 Track Same situation as with Yanu. I think I need new glasses. This is also not Aux88 but could be. Will Web brings 3 cool exlectro tracks to us. "Boomin'" and "Mechanization" are both fast electo tracks with some vocoder-use and nice phunky basslines. "Mechanization (instrumental)" is even better because the analogue bassline get's more space to pump. 8/10 Monolake "Magenta" (Chain Reaction, 1996, CR08) 2 Tracks ("Magenta I", "Magenta II") White label of the new Chain Reaction. Finally CR went a new way. This vinyl is much faster and more 'techno'-style as previous releases. For me there is too much trance in it and I prefer it with a -8% pitch. Until now this is the least progessive release of CR for me. :( 4/10 Robert Hood (M-Plant, M-P306) 2 Tracks ("The Pace, "Wandering Endlessly") My third new Hood record this month. His high-quality output is really fascinating and it's interesting to see his development. "The Pace" is a typical Hood track, monotone, floating but much calmer than old M-Plant releases and as big suprise you get a mix at the last quater to his old style. Cool! "Wandering Endlessly" is another calm track, almost chill-out. Basicaly a beat and a modulated string sound. 2nd half with some variations. Will fit very good to some BC/Chain Reaction vinyls. I wonder is the birth of his first child had an effect on this recods. Sound like someone is enjoying live. :-) That's good! 9/10 Jedi Knights "New School Science" (Universal Language Production, 1996) Do-EP, 6 Tracks I've heard about the Jedi Knight before but this is the first record I listend to and I had to buy it. The principle is: "Feel the funk!" On these 6 tracks you get the Groove from Electro, Hip-Hop (or call it Trip-Hop) to Funky-Disco. My fave is "May the funk be with you", an electro track based on a sample of the early 80's. 8 points for the music and 1 extra point for the great cover design. 9/10 "May the funk be with you!" +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | visions and sounds from the wicked world of electronic dance music | | WWW -> http://rave.city.de/wicked | | a servive of http://www.music.city.de and Touch-Net | +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

Just got back from rekkid shopping (this store, Higher Source in Huntington Beach CA, focuses mostly on house and jungle, but they do have two rows each of "experimental" and "downtempo" where I usually find 90% of my vinyl). The store's buyer must have been busy, because I walked out with: * Terranova, "Close the Door" 2x12 (Copasetik Recordings) 1999. Some first-rate downtempo grooves, with probably the nicest understated vocals (by Coco and Cath Coffey) I've heard in quite some time. http://www.copasetik.com * Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players, "Just Landed" 2x12 (~scape) 1999. Heard quite a bit about this from the list, and at first listen it matches and even exceeds the hype. So far I'm very impressed with this new label. * Muslimgauze, "Port Said" (audio nl) ??? Nice staticky clicky ambient. Don't know much else about this. * Mira Calix, "One on One" 2x12 (Warp) 2000. The album at the very top of my wish list, and I grabbed it brand new, unplayed. WooHOOO! Will probably be on my 2000 top ten list. * Susumu Yokota, "image 1983-1998" (Leaf/Skintone) 2000. * Susumu Yokota, "magic thread" (Leaf/Skintone) 2000. Nice lo-fi ambient and experimental soundscapes. Found mention of this artist in the archives, and then found Dan Hill's eloquent reviews on Motion: http://motion.state51.co.uk/reviews/537.html http://motion.state51.co.uk/reviews/442.html * Process, "shape-space" (Fat Cat) 2000. Moody, clicky, noisy, ambient plus some mutated rhythms. * Klettermax, ??? (Statt Musik) 1999 (A side: "lotto," "total" B side: "dur-o-lastic," "vibrex," "sockenrab" Quirky minimal techno, with some plunks and blurts and other odd accents that compliment the 4x4 drive. Anyone know anymore about this? * Murat???, "Pilgrimage" (Method 005) 2x12, black label on one side, white label with "Pilgrimage," a bar code, and "Mixed by Murat for Method 11:11" on the other side. Noisy, full-ranged minimalesque techno, a bit harder than my normal Chain Reaction/Stewart Walker/Kit Clayton taste, but I think it will work itself in quite well. Anyone know of this? * the audio janitor, "score for composition 11" (Liquid Sky) 1999 This is by DJ Olive with help from Raz Mesinai, and consists of a three vinyl set in a nice plastic folder (three copies of the same 12") with dozens of short tracks of random sounds, vocal samples/stutterings, percussive snippets, etc. From the liner: "this vinyl score was developed for three turntables. the solo musician is limited to three copies. this vinyl score of various sounds comprise a palette so no musician need play all the sounds. adding sounds from other records is not permitted. mix for 10 to 20 min. reverb/delay optional." Apparently you are supposed to use three turntables and send the recording back to Mr. Olive. I wish I had the chance to meet all those illbient guys when I lived back there in Williamsburg NYC, Greenpoint being just down the street. Alas. Anyway, I wavered on purchasing this one at $30, but the guy at the counter cut me a big discount on my total, so I felt better on the drive home. And lots of stuff I had in my pile at one time and put back in the shelf for one reason or another, including Smith and Mighty's new one, Kirk DeGiorgio's "Sky Series" EP (which I wasn't bowled over by--it was okay but didn't make the cut to the cash register), Air's soundtrack to "Virgin Suicides" (some nice open moments and humble beats). Maybe I'll keep my eye out for these on CD later. G. P.S. Thanks to listmember Greg Clow from Toronto for spending time with us out here in Cali (Christopher Robin (zimbette), Daniel Bremmer, Dave Mosso, et al) during his recent visit. At my weekly club Dervish he shook off whatever post-airline/airport monotony he may have experienced and performed a mesmerizing guest DJ set (all CDs, travelling light) of downbeaty, electro-y, IDMish, dubby, groovy stuff--this man has impeccable taste. He is a very nice guy, as well. Taco Mesa is waiting for your next visit, Greg! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
