I saw a further mention of the DX-100 on idm, and if I remeber rightly wasn't it voted in the top 10 of idm machines. What is the fascination with this machine, I thought all the 4 operator DX range had the same engine so why would the DX100 with it's nasty little keys and spectrum style buttons be any better than say the DX21,27 or preferably the rack mounted TX81Z. Also isn't it the same 4op chip they used for the OPL3, the standard used on all the PC Soundcards ... Personally I hated Yamaha with their DX-7 series as it turned Roland all digital and finshed off the JP8 and Sci Prophet5 - bastards... Also anyone any idea what Orbital are up to with this "seated venue" tour, in the UK ? M:) [-A Cyborgs Eye View---------------------http://www.u-net.com/~cev-] | home of.... This is an old message, but allow me to make some assertions on the machine. First of all the DX-100 presets are "vintage" sounding, and spine tingling to listen to (for my project, anyway...) You can edit all the 1096 presets on the board, and TX81Z is a decent rackmount addition to the DX-100. Roger Troutman uses it(watch the remix of 'california love' again, you'll see it!) Kirk Degiorgio uses it(quite heavily for his Esoterik project I found out! He edits the "moog" preset like no one else can!!!!), and as an added bonus, Juan Atkins & Derrick May prefer it to a DX-7. That is reason enough for me! I fuckin' love this machine! Derek Jordan favorite DX-100 presets: 1.Moog 2.Snare Bass 3.Wine Glass 4.Transporter 5.Helicopter and others I won't mention until my material is clean enough to be released!!!

The DX27 has got exactly the same sound synthesis, so does the DX21, except that the 21 includes an enveloppe generator for pitch. [with which you can do some bizarre effects]. The DX27 & 21 sound exactly the same as the 100. [so does the FB01]. The DX11 & TX81Z are different though, although they can do the same sounds they've got oscillators which have square + Sawtooth waveforms.

1096 PRESETS...? I owned a DX100 for 1 year, I knew every function on the thing, but I am sure there weren't 1096 presets?! My DX21 has got 16x8 presets, and my DX100 had a lot less! Are there different versions of the thing then? Or are there secret memory banks :).

Check out Model 500's "The wanderer" on the b-side of Ocean to Ocean for a fat DX-monobass-line! [Presets]

Never seen this one in a clean DX100 or any other DX/FB, is it really called "Moog", or just a renamed "Monobass"?

Yep. That's a familiar one :)!

Most presets suck. The real fun is in programming the sounds yourself. One of the best things is assigning the velocity to the operator out levels, you can do great filter simulations that way. It's even possible to make acid: [well...more or less...] Take the "Synthbass" preset, fiddle around with the op.out. levels until you think it sounds ok and then assign either one or all operators (or just 2 or 3) the velocity. [And put the thing in mono-mode with a fingered portamento, play it from a velo-sensitive keyboard or play around with velo in your sequencer.] Who needs a 303 or 101!? :) The same thing for doing this with a piano preset, you can get that Basic Channel OB Xpander pianola sound too! I've reconstructed it. With the help of a few "nameless" owners of the DX-100... 4 banks x 24 sounds in each bank, plus the "internal play" mode, giving you (again) 4 banks x 24 sounds in each bank. I've also got some additonal sound effects I was able to install, giving me even more control of the editing, plus additional sounds...It's not a typical DX-100...

Got it. It's embedded deep into my subconcious.

All of the ones mentioned are listed in the owners manual(the original, (c) 1986) You CAN rename them, but mine has all the original names! And yes, you can get that "squidgy analog" sound made famous by the 303. I can't say too much about that, or my partner will bash me over the head with a rock!!! Ha. Ha. Derek

Hey ho, thank you yr right ! Too much hype surrounding only the DX 100 Another difference between TX81Z and earlier 4op FM: the TX81Z and on use 16 bit DA's instead of 12 bit. A difference between 6op (DX7) and 4op FM which can also explain some "fatness" in 4op machines: When you set the output level of a 6op machine to 99, it has the same output level as a 4op machine at 90. When you take an operator in a 4op machine to 99 your distorting it a bit trainspotting bit: The sfg05 generator for CX5M machines is also the same as the FB01/DX100 and so on. Is there a release date for Public Energy's album? As a noted Speedy J trainspotter I deserve to know :) A.

Wait a minute?!!! The DX100 responds to velocity information? I havent used mine in a while, but that doesnt sound possible. I'll have to dust that thing off and try some of this stuff :^) sean Matrix Records ph/fax: 312.640.1378
