WHEN I LOST MY RDJ VIRGINITY: The first time I heard an Aphex record was when I picked up a promo of the US On single at a record fair in 1994. I was listening to Orbital 2 very heavily at the time and was starting to buy other things like FSOL's Lifeforms. I heard this Aphex guy was interesting so I took it home and gave it a whirl. I was shocked. I loved the beats but I couldn't understand the music. I was used to lush production heavy dance stuff like The Orb, so this music was a new world to me. I must have listened to the thing a million times just trying to figure it out. When I did I fell in love. Next record fair I found the SAW II promo. When I played this I found it utterly different than On except for Blue Calx. I played it when I did homework and it seriously messed with my head. When I saw Aphex Dj at Millenium I knew something was happening. I was blown away by the hairy guy hanging over the tables. I bought I Care.. the day it came out in the US. Then Ventolin and now I'm just plain fucking insane. I've bought every Aphex record I can find. I'm only missing four Ep's: Q-chastic, Joy Rex 5 and 9, Powerpill. I've bought everything else he's released (excluding the odd compilation track) and have spent a few hundred dollars doing so. I am now a junkie....strung along by the rumors of new Rephlex releases and info from IDM on new RDJ projects. All is lost....All is lost.... -Fresh

All rephlex records are rumors until they show up in the shop. I keep thinking the same thing, that I must be missing something. Maybe I just haven't heard the the right music of his, but so far I haven't had any reason to buy any of his stuff based on what I've heard (on compilations such as AI, AI II, TEX3, etc). Sometimes I think I should buy one of his albums (like his SAW stuff), but don't have enough money to buy albums by artists I don't know if I like.

I made my first Aphex Twin purchase not six months ago [Selected Ambient Works 2], one year after I had read a review in in "Axcess" Magazine, giving the album their lowest grade and labelling it "a mistake." I was jumping into a $23 dollar risk that day. I had no exposure to Richard James' history and little experience with dark, beatless ambient. There was a certain uneasiness when I popped the first CD in my player. The packaging was odd and cryptic. There were no titles. One of the review-blurb-sticker things read 'if the monolith from 2010 could speak, this is what it would say' [or something to that effect]. The first song droned on for a few minutes. I moved to the next track. Same thing. When the third track came on, I was instantly moved. It was mooshy, moody, and elegant. My confidence was restored and I pressed on. It took a _long_ time for me to get into this recording, but I feel that it is the single most important part of my CD collection. I rarely listen to it now - as not to "waste" it. I then picked up the Warp "On" remixes. Some of the music was odd, other familiar [background music for "The Real World, etc.], but it was all interesting. I moved on to _Hangable Autobulb._ Again, hard to get into, but now exciting everytime I hear it. That was in September/October. My Aphex catalog now ranges from the vinyl recording of AB1, to Classics on wax, to _GAK_, to Polygon Window, to the Titanic remixes and beyond. James' music is so incredibly interesting to me. I get nervous whenever I unwrap the next acquired record I get. Much of the pooh-poohing I see about RDJ is his wackiness+ego. So what if he compares himself to Mozart? The proof is in the pudding : you either enjoy his music and go along with his game, or you shun the tunes and dismiss him. One of the aspects that fascinates me about James is his behavior, his history, and his age. I recall reading a review of _Donkey Rhubarb_ at Hyperreal where the author imagined RDJ lounging around the timpani during 'ICCT Hedral' or leading a royal procession while listening to 'Pancake Lizard.' What do you think about when you listen to James? It's hard for me to think of anything BUT James. I often have to remind myself that there is an actual person behind such beautiful madness. Whether you like this music or not, everyone on this list and everyone familiar with James must admit that he _is_ an odd, interesting fellow. It's this facet of James that keeps me going. Unlike the electronic artists I'm familiar with, he puts a little bit of himself in his music, be it a toothy grin, a photograph, his mom, or a demonic shout. But don't get me wrong. I don't want to marry the guy. .grant.h.horne .http://delta.is.tcu.edu/~ghhorne/ .bib.mouse on mars

Me too, and what a thrill it is! You never know what you're going to get because of the many different styles he touts. But, like you said, since he brings with his music a part of himself, you always have an idea what it will be like. When I listen to his music, I often find myself smiling very wide and thinking of him. Its as if his music paints a portrait of him and that is something many IDM artists lack (although I don't know if I want them to have it). When I eagerly opened HAB1 and played it, I said to myself "uh oh, I'm not much into this tinny jungle thing." But upon 3 of 4 listens, I get the same rush that I get with his other exceptional recordings. That is not to say that all his recordings are exceptional (I personally could do without the pop-cheesyness of Donkey Rhurbarb), I just believe that when he's good, nobody makes me smile from inside like he does. Beside, the sharp hard bass of Children Talking is enough to make my body undulate with its own will...

I think much credit is due to James for bringing this music out of the darkness, and giving many other artists the chance for exposure. It is his oddness that makes him a little more marketable than other IDM artists I believe. After all, that Warner Bros. deal for SAWII was the only one of its kind (and boy did WB hate that).

the thought has crossed my mind...and dismissed in the same second!

If I were to judge RDJ by his work under the alias of Polygon Window, I would come to the inevitable conclusion that he blows chunks. Now, before I incur the wrath of RDJ fanatics I will say this: 1) the Quoth single ain't half bad 2) his work as Aphex Twin, is for the most part excellent. Don't judge RDJ by his AI pieces, his talent is best revealed in SAW I. This album is definately in my top ten albums list, and is well worth paying the import CD price. Buy it!! khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu
