greetings, thanx to your help everyone, I just finished listening to that show on NYU :) It was pretty good, and finally I have some way to get actual exposure (as opposed to idm feedback) to idm before just buying it.... Anyway, the last track he played was particularly smooth electro, the name of the artist was X Squared and the track was Electric Soul. Has anyone heard of this? Does this artist have a full length album out? Cd? Or is this track from a comp? It was excellent, any help would be appreciated. thanx and-e

Absolutement! I reviewed it on the 313 list (I'll post the review at the conclusion of this reply).

No, but if the artist behind this most recent Direct Beat is who I suspect (Mad Mike) then he's got more then an albums worth of work out and about. X2 (x-squared) at present is only on 12" (and on mixed tapes ;-) and available via Submerge, who IMO run a very tight ship in the sea of internet mailorder.

You might peruse their (submerge) web site for compilation discs of that same "x2" nature. Someone help me out with the name of that recent electrostylee comp! Kent? Teep on now: soul oddity<--astralwerks on the bug in the miami BASS bin tip Date: Thu, 22 Feb 96 From: (Mushmouth) To: 313@hyperreal.com Subject: (313) The Uvex Bassgoggle Vs Low End Shades Inspired by the 12" Electric Soul . X2 and the "put up don't shut up" (and this is AINT no suck up) train of thought. The Uvex Bassgoggle Vs Low End Shades by Mushmouth With an abrupt awakening by a bad taste in your mouth, you realize that yet again, a drunkbass spending spree has brought the 'Electro-Ho' into your bedroom. Your "revival" hangover kicks in full-time as you take notice of the BIG ASS (thank you super freeke ;-) pair of Uvex Bass- goggles on your Technics nite table. Damn those are silly. But "rock the house! '' sounded oh so fine last night! Still, you lament, light up and pull out your shame hiding sunglasses (in one sentence) from beneath your home computer. Hit the PPPtimer and the modem generation national anthem plays out.....another connection. Ahhh I feel better already. Nothing takes your mind off misfortune faster then a quick trip on the links and almost instinctively (that and the fact you made http://www.submerge.com your browsers "home") you arrive at the pirate's ship's slip in search of a redemption song. http://ftp.msen.com/~submerge/Soundbits/PirateBYTES/x2.AIFF Those Uvex are history right about now as the unmistakable Mad Mike voice over alerts "X2 I'll CU there in the night....". Mmm, what's that sound...spy vs spy techno electro love? I need that. With a click of your finger and a clack on the keyboard, the Submariner confirms, "you're gonna get yours". Two days later you greet a turn of the PO Box key with delight and bring a beaming yellow "package too large" slip up to the counter to make the final transaction that brings the electric soul into your hands. In a cinematic moment as climatic as OB-1 finally catching the entire Princess Leah hologram as projected by R2, you drop the needle and steal off into a Low End Shade State of mind. "We'll meet undercover....no one else will know." Instantly, cliches like "ROCK THE HOUSE" spring from premature tombstones to reclaim their sacred status quo. Christ- sakes, that shit used to MEAN something before big business took the house party from the homes of America if you know what I mean. Really, to me what makes 'electro' (I guess this goes for our entire electronic genre) alluring first and foremost is the homegrown bravado intangible that speaks out in phrases of oozing coolness, which confirms, people who know the difference, notice the difference. aran@mit.edu po box 581 cambridge,ma 02142 USA

Do you mean "Origins of a Sound"? File under M for mandatory. All respects to Lenny and Mike on this one. I actually had about half this disk on vinyl already, but the digital splendour of this comp can't be denied. "origins of a sound". it clicks and pop-a-locks all the way home. when you listen to mad mike's "base camp 808" and think "shit, mike was throwin' this down in his mama's basement in 1989?????". truly the origin from which all things jedi, elektoid, and bantha flow. the juan atkins collaboration which opens the disc is a non-stop bubblin' groover. it winds down and spins back up at least 7 times; you'll be wiping sweat off yer brow and staggerin' off the floor until you get sucked back in to the electro-madness of that track. a lot of fun and plenty of bouncing vibe. aux88 contribute some smooth sub-bass groove in 'let's dance', and drexciya have a couple of kickers, tho not top form. call , fax or email submerge NOW if you don't have this one yet.
