(I hate to draw this thread out, which I'm sure is REALLY interesting to our
IDM readership in, say, Finland (-: But ... )
Philip, in a way you're just reinforcing my point. The Freaky Chakra/SCO
event was *not* billed as a FC/SCO "concert" or "event" or whatnot, it was a
*party* officially thrown as an anniversary party for a local LA club magazine.
That made it a *rave* in my eyes, which just happened to be thrown in a more
conventional venue than most. I saw plenty of X'd-out ravers (OK, so maybe
they weren't 16 and they didn't all have pacifiers (-: ) at that event, btw.
My point being that Freaky Chakra & Single Cell Orchestra probably wouldn't
have drawn that many people on their own, certainly not as part of some
"concert"-type event held at the Troubador - but as part of a more-or-less rave
event, they were exposed to a much larger audience, and as such, they went
down a storm.
In a vain attempt to keep this IDM-related, there's a parallel "all-IDM night"
thread going. Recall that the High Priestess of IDM and vrave, Bella, went to
just such a night in London not too far back and said there was only about 75
people there, and that it was kinda boring. If I was a performer and someone
came to me and said "Well, we can book you at this dingy little club and
maybe we'll get 150 people, of which 125 or so will be the converted and 25
or so will be the curious or unknowing; *or* we can book you at this rave
that might have up to 1000 people, but only 100 or less of the converted 'cuz
the other fans refuse to go to raves", I know which one I'd choose. Gimme
900 potential new fans over the loss of 25-50 stay-at-homes anyday.
