Well please let me join you ;) Philips have just bought out a range of DCC machines, and i assume that DCC stands for Digital Compact Cassette. I was under the impression that it was a system that was similar to DAT, but like it's alot cheaper, so what's the difference? DCC can play analogue audio tapes too... and more security protection against repetitive copying? The tapes you can buy are shorter, though the size is bigger... and doesn't the DCC have the track names info on pre-recorded cassettes? And I guess the big difference is that you can actually buy pre-recorded on DCC... That's it... Have fun

True story: A few weeks ago I was hanging out at the local once-a-week night, Smooth, with some other members of the local Techno Oldfarts (ages 25-33 or so) Society. Russ "Ferox" Gabriel was spinning and he did a half-hour electro mini-set. An elderly friend and myself [:)] went absolutely nuts after getting to hear "Time Space Transmat", "Planet Rock", "Tour De France", "Rockit", and "Numbers", alongside some newer Ectomorph and RAC tracks, in quick succession. Of course, the highlight was hearing one 16-year-old say to the kid standing next to him "This is what I think they call 'old-school'" (you could hear the quotation marks in his voice.) I felt like whipping out the Geritol. :/ On the plus side, another group of teenagers were spotted on another part of the floor breakdancing. Have to say I'm not really sure where this notion of Joyrexs being as expensive as BMWs originated but I found two at 7 UKP each about two years ago. Although a little expensive for a four track 45 it's nowhere near the proportions people are alleging. I sent the second copy to someone in Canada at cost before anyone asks.

have some guts. prodigy is an aweful band based on their dumb badass image just like reznor, manson, etc. aphex does not care what people think about his image. his music is much more creative. and he is just plain strange. i do not think he acts strange on purpose or dies his hair for effect. .... grav

don't think so? He certainly plays up the media, I'm not sure what you refer to by "acts strange" as I've never seen the man in action, but it's probably safe to say it's as fake as his media identity. I find it hard to beleive there's a difference between the two. --brett

I hink its more a question of levels of commerciality. AFX and Prodigy are perhaps doing largely the same thing, as you say, but at the high level of exposure afforded the Prodigy, their actions are exaggerated both by their exposure and the groups own response to that exposure. AFX meanwhile can get away with things with less fear of criticism from purists, as he has a smaller band interested in him, and many of them are purists anyway. Is it out? I've only managed to hear a promo cassette, and I agree, it's top. A mix of techno and jungle sensibilities which actually works. A couple of the tracks are off of the two Buckfunk 3000 singles on Language. Si Begg's done stuff on Tresor and as Cabbage Boy on Ninja Tune (or Ntone?) - I'm sure someone will step up with a discog. Part Terry Riley/Steve Reich inspired minimalia, part abstract sound (prepared piano/chamber sounds & such), part weird-step. Really classy and ridiculously hi-fi for the content (most of the real odd-ball Dn'B has that 60-cycle thing happening prominently). Hmm.. I believe you have the wrong list, indeed. This is not the "Intelligent" Dance Music List, but the "Intelligent Dance Music" List. It may seem like mere semantics, but we make no claim that list-members are intelligent, merely that music discussed is. They have talkback, or yakbak or whatever, you could use them for that.
