Morning to all...last nite I picked up Luke Slaters "My Yellow Rug" 2 x 12 on GPR and I have to say that it is quite lovely. It's not ambient in the way Apollo and Fax releases are, but it *is* downtempo and experimental in a Global Communications kinda way. I am sure that with repeated and careful listening this will grow on me a lot. Anyone outhere heard this yet? sasha

I haven't heard this one yet. Luke Slater's previous record as 7th Plain, 'The 4 Cornered Room' (GPR) was nice too. It sounded a bit like Sandoz goes Detroit. Most tracks on this album are really well built up. Luke also released some stuff on Djax as Clementine, which was much rawer and harder. Also good tho. Just had my head very very mashed by a open air goa party here in France - readallaboutit on streetsound magazine if you want the lowdown and all that. http://www.streetsound.com/zone/hotflash.html (It'll be uploaded soon) Real reason for me writing is I was driving back and we had a rather fine tape on (7000 ohm compilation) and it has Planetary assault systems - booster on it. My brain was so impressed by this that I wanna buy the album - which one was it. And is any other Slater stuff as good (i.e seventh plain etc..) Cheerz, Catweasel. P.S. Anyone out there who would classify the Emmanuel Top stuff as intelligent? Certainly does my head in lots.

I think _Booster_ is from the Planetary Assualt Systems _Future Funk Vol.4_ 12" on Peacefrog. The flip of this is _Diesel Drudge_, a nasty Basic Channel-esque track. Its okay as a 12" but not as good as previous PAS 12"s - _Vol.2_ has _Sleeping Sin Seemless_ on it which is quite possibly one of the best ever IDM tracks (IMVHO)...

You betcha. The first Seventh Plain LP is a corker but I haven't heard the other stuff. All the PAS stuff is good, but some of it is hard as fuck. The X-Tront series is also good - hard and funky. The Morganistic 2x12" on Input Neuron is excellent - kind of like Jeff Mills. There's also a Morganistic 12" on Irdial (rarer than rocking horse fecal solids) and some Clementine 12"s on DJax Upbeats... Trawl through some second hand vinyl stalls and you might come across some old stuff Luke did on the Jelly Jam label, which is showing its age a bit but still has an accessable funk to it. His remixes are also worth checking out; there's a PAS remix of a Steve Bicknell track on Cosmic (COSMIC 3.5) which is unbelievable; practically unmixable though as whatever you follow it up with sounds lame in comparison. The world would be a much poorer place without Mr. Slater around - he doesn't seem to get half as much respect as he should do... || [CiM] || u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

It was originally on Planetary Funk Volume 4 (Peacefrog), and (I hope) it'll be re-released on the Archive LP out quite soon. It's apparently also on the Prime Cuts 2 comp (Prime), but I haven't seen this yet. I love this track... 7th Plain stuff is pretty different - more listening-oriented than banging club tracks, and it's all really good... see ya _________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk electronic musician/dj _________________________________________________

Allow me; what I actually meant was that despite the older Jelly Jams material's *age*, there is still a wicked funky style to it. It might not be cutting edge any more, but it'll still go down a treat at your local techno discotheque. Still with me? || [CiM] || u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

Sorry I'm so behind, but what has come out since 'Morganistic - fluids amniotic' that I need to check out? What were the 'Clementine' records on DJAX like, stylistically, and were they before or after the 2x12" on Input Neuron? I prefer the deep and spooky 'Morganistic' style to his other styles, for comparison.

Only the _Shades Amaze EP_ on GPR (under the 7th Plain). Heres my mate Lou who's heard the EP: I'm a big fan of Slater, back as far as the Too Slots for Bill stuff on Jelly Jam (especially the Transluscent ep), but didn't buy Shades Amaze. I thought it was lush as you would expect from the 7th Plain guise but I found that it wasn't that compelling (perhaps I was a bit put off by the fact it was billed as a concept ep.) Saying that, Luke Slater is still one the most exciting figure in British Techno, and I eagerly await the new Planetary Assault Systems double pack on Peacefrog (although Booster on P.A.S. 4 I think is one of his more dissapointing tunes). Been a pleasure :) Thanks Lou!

They were before the _Fluids Amniotic_ 2x12". And heres Lou again with the lowdown on the Clementine stuff: I've only got 'Sugar Step' from a couple of yrs back. As you'd expect from Djax its in a Chi- town stylee but has Slater's own brand of futurism injected. Worth tracking down is the double pack "Cosmopolitan for the Cosmos" again on Djax.

Remember that there's an amazing 7th Plain-type Morganistic EP on Irdial (rare as anything though) - this doesn't sound like the Input Neuron 2x12" at all. I heard there's a new Luke Slater's album "Alright On Top" out April 8th. It is suppose to be pretty 80s sounding, with vocals on 8 out of 10 tracks from singer Ricky Barrow of Aloof. His shift in sound, is probably why he has shifted from Novamute to Mute. I love most of his output, except for his last album. This forthcoming one sounds dodgy. I guess we'll soon see. There's a single called "Nothing At All" out on March 18th __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
