I haven't seen a definitive answer one way or the other. Buy the import, it's worth paying three to five bucks extra, rather than waiting six months for TVT to get the lead out.

The store I was in on Saturday (Aron's Records, Hollywood) had shittons of import copies of "Spanners". Nice cover art, but since I seem to be the only person in the IDM hemisphere that thought "Bytes" was utterly listless & boring, I didn't buy it ... I wasn't very impressed by "Bytes" either. Some good tracks but I found the whole thing rather dry and disjointed. "Spanners" is a _whole_ lot better. They really have come up with a series of great tracks. Some of this album hardly qualifies as "techno" in almost any regular definition of that term. Where do these stories start? Watts Music had these in stores a week after the English release. Did someone forget to tell them about the ban? And I wouldn't hold my breath about a domestic release, since TVT/Waxtrax, who picked up 'bytes' hasn't seen fit to release 'Temple of Transparent Balls' domestically. I thought we went over this. TVT wont be releasing Transparent Balls, because they don't have anything to do with GPR, and Balls is a GPR release. TVT's deal is releasing Warp records in the US. TVT is on-line, so they can be reached for confirmation of Spanners, but I don't have their e-mail address handy. They are rather slow to release in the US, so if no one in the US can wait for TVT, then jump on the Warp release. I thought Byes was good when I bought it and hardly ever listened to it after. Every couple months I pull it out and remark to myself that some of the songs are cool and put it away again. It just doesn't stick with me. Spanners, however, is incredible. Buy it. Picked up the A.P.L. album as well, which despite its own brilliance was overshadowed by the towering Black Dog. I'm planning on buying the import and have already attempted to order it. There may or may not be a so-called "import ban", but so far that hasn't stopped the store/distribution route that I go through - they just seem to do it anyway ( at least until just before the domestic arrives ). There are always a number of people who will pay more for something NOW instead of waiting ( myself included ). Import Bans are not as high-handed as they sound, and they relate directly to the size of the companies and shipments involved. No company can stop small import shipments. No company is stupid enough to sue someone over small shipments if they knew that they had happened. An import ban is simply a assertive statement by the either the label planning to license and domestically release an import that they have licensing rights for their geographic area, therefore no one else ought to be selling them here. If some distributor imported a whole boatload of CD's the company that had negotiated a license to domestically release the item may be within their rights to sue the original record label and/or the importing distributor. Very large record companies ( Warner, etc) tried for years to forbid any import of any title of any artist that was licensed to them, even if that title was not scheduled for domestic release. Fortunately, this tactic has largely failed. Why does it takes months & months ? Because it takes that long for the record labels to have their lawyers iron out the financial agreements and for the stubborn executives to actually agree to it. Also, the domestic label may be waiting to see if the release sells well enough in the original country to warrant spending money to rerelease it abroad. If someone reading this has a better explanation, please explain. I too would like a shorter import delays, shorter domestic licensing turnarounds, and lower prices overall. PT23

I, for one, will be waiting for the domestic issue of _Spanners_. I'm not condemning you for wanting it sooner, but after the flop of the US release of SAWII I think any label willing to do US issues of this stuff is pretty brave. I'll do what I can to support them. Of course, I didn't care much for _Bytes_, so it's easier for me to be patient.

The entire discussion that follows pretty much has nothing to do with the non-US readers of this list. I apologize, but this seems to be mostly a US problem.

For the most part, I agree. If Sire hadn't left a track off the US CD version of SAWII (as compared to the European CD version), I would have purchased it. :-) Of course, if it didn't take so long for the darn things to be released in the US, or if we could consistently get a clear say-so from US record companies that they are (not) releasing a particular release nearabouts a praticular date, then life would be much better. I am quite thankful for Astralwerks posting about their upcoming System 7 (777) double-CD US release. Since I am not a huge System 7 fan but do like them some, I am much more likely to fork out for the domestic release than pay more for less and get the import. My question is why they don't get their stuff out faster. I know there's legal stuff to mush through, but still, just how long should I be willing to wait for _Spanners_? If I can get a European copy for $18, why wait half a year for the $16 domestic? That extra $2 gains me half a year of listening pleasure (provided I like the CD, of course), and I'm usually willing to spend it. Of course, US companies aren't going to get their act together if we all buy the imports before they release the CDs. But we're not going to wait for the US releases if they don't put them out fast enough. Does anyone else see a chicken/egg dilemma here? I agree that it would be great to get these things sooner. However, the difference in price is a lot more than $2 at the stores I visit. For an immported copy of Warp stuff I can expect to pay at least $20, and for a U.S. version no more than $13 or so. God bless Instinct and Astralwerks.

Well, I'd say that judgement of SAWII as being a "flop" depends on your point of view. In Sire's view, it was a "flop" because it only sold about 10,000 copies... However, smaller labels which license material such as TVT/Wax Trax!, Instinct and Astralwerks are happy with such an amount. This is what they expect and they prepare for it accordingly, thus they can do this profitably. However, Sire, a company accustomed to mainstream sales numbering 10-50 times what SAWII sold, is less likely to do this sort of thing in the future. However, their failure probably won't affect whether Instinct licenses more Rising High or Visible licensing Barramundi for that matter... Although I wouldn't say Spanners will be released domestically in a prompt and timely manner, I would guess that *eventually* you'll be able to pick it up cheap in the States. Peace, Matt

I just bought Black Dog's _Spanner_ and Aphex Twins _Classics_ for $23 each. And it was worth every penny ( except of course for the AFX tracks that I already had off the domestic Bubblebath I ). However, I did buy it at a small store ( low volume, high overhead ) that deals mostly in hard to find imports & lots of cool vinyl. I prefer helping these guys serve the idm niche than paying some big stupid store $18 or $20 if they ever got the damn CD in ( not bloody likely here ). And, besides, I hate waiting for a domestic and then finding out it is missing a track or has a crap job done on the packaging. As long as I am bitching, yesterday I was in such a rush to play track 2 of FSOL-ISDN that when I tried to open it, the cardboad moved and the velcro didn't, leaving a big rip in my Buggy G Riphead graphics!! Goddamn velcro non-jewel box pain in the ass. Good thing CD's are made of nice sturdy plastic. I am still waiting for music to come out on flat little cards that have a gigabyte or so of micro-ROM on them for some nice digital, true random access, 24 bit word length wonderment.
