You've summed it up right there. It's economics baby. Want to make a decent buck from putting on a show, and you're gonna have to sell tickets. If the 'listeners only crowd' (of which I am usually a member) can't fill the place, by all means get some people who prefer to move in there. Your only options if you want some dance free space is to convince a promoter there are enough people who just want to listen to support acts, or to become a promoter yourself and start setting stuff up.
