I'm reading "Bass Culture: When Reggae was King" by Lloyd Bradley at the moment, which I'm finding pretty entertaining going... quite an exhaustive tome, at least far more so than any other book on jamaican music I've ever read... and that has definitely given me the impression of it being extremely difficult to work out who actually released tracks originally...
