I just think that a lot of the current IDM musicians are like DJ's with
laptops. It's a lot more entertaining seeing a DJ Qbert or a Kid Koala
than DJ Crossfader. They both have a place, granted, but you're right -
one's a show, the other is live music. The more senses you entertain, the
more people will be entertained, and it's relatively easy to be visually
entertaining, so if it gets people more "into it," why not?
Has anyone been to an "idm performance" where the artist's visual show
interfered with their music performance? I don't mean distracting - I mean
the artist was more focused on doing visuals than music. I don't think
it's a big problem (not like rock, where many performers will scream and
jump on things, when everyone knows you play guitar better when you're not
running around like a madman), but, since you're asking what we expect from
a live show, I'm going to ask you - why not provide some visual stimulation
too?
Or at least olfactory stimulation. It's not like these people necessarily
smell good :-D
cheers,
