Peanut Butter makes a good solvent/abrasive that both dissolves the
adhesive (its the oil) and also rolls up the gunk into little balls. After
the gum comes off, you can then clean it with soap. In a pinch, nose
grease works well too. Soap will not dissolve the gum in the first place,
as you've probably discovered.
