they made it work on purpose. mainly to compete with shockwave audio,
is my guess. shockwave streams over http and requires no special
server (of course you need to pay macromedia for the authoring
tools). realaudio decided to go them one better. you can set up a
real audio streaming site for free. the encoder is free and you don't
need anything other than a web server (use apache, it's free too).

even wrote a shell script to take the track of the audio CD, encode it
and set up the real audio metafiles so i can make tracks for the
archive while i work.
