I can try to explain.. IDM is something which sounds like it is from around 200 years in the future. It often sounds like a soundtrack to some stellar movie, no matter what style, and I'm not talking ambient mind you, but then the term 'intelligent' directly relates to ambience, for example: intelligent jungle/drum'n'bass = jungle/drum'n'bass that's got an atmospheric and cosmic quality. When I listen to the classic IDM stuff like Ae: Incunabula or SAW85-92 or the Dot stuff.. I hear stuff that is,for sure, intelligent dance music. When I listen to stuff like the Prodigy, a track which is nothing but some hard metal sounding stuff that repeats on to infinity and keeps saying "smack my bitch up ! smack my bitch up !" with no variance whatsoever.. that is not IDM. Ru Paul, is not IDM either, although it's nothing like the Prodigy, more like euro-cheese at 180bpm. at least this is what I thought of it.. If I'm correct, it's actually what you're trying to say that you cannot explain, you just know when something's IDM.. when you hear it, you know, sometimes even if you don't know what IDM is... but it also depends on the person.. I base my opinion (fact? I don't believe IDM has been established on such a concrete base for anything to be IDM by fact.) that Chemical Bros. are not IDM that imo they are electronic rock'n'roll. they use a little bit of things from electronic dance music and some hip hop influences, etc. but imo, the only thing tieing them to electronic dance music is the fact that they use electronics. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=
