Hello, I was wondering if any list members would be willing to suggest a speaker that they found works particularly well with IDM/electronic music. Thanks for any suggestions. I've been really excessively happy with my Polk Audio RT800i. I am a far cry from a golden ear, but they got really good reviews and seem to have a very "full" sound to my ear. One thing I particularly like is that the mids don't get disproportionally quiet at loud volumes like with a lot of (cheaper) speakers. But, like I said, my hearing isn't all that great, so I might be just as happy with any similarly-priced speaker. http://www.polkaudio.com/home/products.php?category=3&speaker=23 Don't believe the prices on there. I got mine for $550 for a PAIR brand new from Fry's. (vs. the $490 per speaker they tell you). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ No one in particular: quasi-anonymity or good AI? idm@cocksalad.com Potentially embarrasing auto-generated "now playing": David Holmes - 69 Police --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I use my Alesis Monitor One studio reference monitors for listening to music. I think they're great for that. The KRK KRoks would be great for that too, they put out more bass than the Alesis. You need some EQing with any of those though to compensate for the flatness of reference monitors. Get a bunch of CDs, go to the nearest Hi-Fi Center, ask if you can listen to speakers, in YOUR price range, with your CD's, and decide! If you can't listen in a private room, or at least in a room that's quiet enough, go to another store! I did that a few years ago, and I bought a pair of "linn index II ( http://www.audioshopper.com/LinnIndex.htm )" speakers with their rock base, and I like them all; hard to position well in the room, but once it's done, they sound sweet! Things to ask/think when buying a speaker : ( in no order ) 1- Music Type : You need to listen to the speakers with your own music! 2- Room : What kind of room will the speakers be installed, appartment, basement, small, big, carpets, rugs, walls covered with books, ... Rembering that you might listen to the store speakers in a different context! 3- Budget How much do you want to spend, skies the limit ... but you can find really good speakers at lower price! 4- Existing components What's the CD player, Amp, cables, ... When I first bought my speakers, I used cheap cables, and one was really shorter than the other one! when I bought real speaker cables,of the same length, it sounded better! I use Tannoy Reveal Active monitors in my studio. Great response and all-around presence, particularly in the mids. They're self-powered and go for about $700 a pair. Avoid Mackie's self-powered monitors. They're famous for having too much presence in the lower-end....not like that's a bad thing (depending on your tastes), but they're supposed to be flat-reference speakers... -paulp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think the best suggestion is to take some albums you know and love down to your local store and check them out. In terms of which brand, you really can't go wrong with B&W. They offer the (pricey) Nautilus line, which is just incredible, but they also have some more affordable lines (DM), which is what I use. I think there is only one person that can answer your question. You. The sound quality a speaker produces is highly subjective to the listener. I would never buy speakers just because someone on a mailing list recommends them. If you are serious about your new speakers you should take the time to evaluate them yourself. Take a couple CDs you really care about and know well and see which speakers fit your taste. And don't go just by price either thinking that expensive equals good sound. I've listened to a fare share of different speakers and some of the REALLY expensive ones sounded like crap in my environmant and with my other audio equipment. Paradigm speakers rock pretty much everything else out there for the money. go listen to the moniter 60s or the studio 60s... around a 1000 a pair.. but you can get cheaper ones, and they'll still sound like you paid three times the cost. the floor standing ones can rumble a whole room with drivers that are only 5.25". go here: http://www.paradigm.ca/ :) -k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I gotta seriously second this opinion... I'm pretty sure you just can't get better speakers for the price. The price is still pretty damn high, and there are certainly nicer speakers-- but to get better you're gonna have to look at $5 to $10K. I dunno about IDM specific... for me, they're so sweet that I'd almost hate to play anything but classical on them. Not that I have a set, way too rich for my blood. I'm perfectly happy with my PARADYME speakers (can anyone explain this? the web links for paradyme and paradigm are all mixed up... I got them "new," fairly cheap at a consignment shop. no serial numbers, no model indication, but they sound great.) Z __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! If you're budget conscious, I'd recommend the Technics SB-LX30 (only $100). I bought it on a recommendation from Consumer Reports, and so far I've been very pleased. And the bass handling is great, as BoC now sounds a whole lot better on these than my old JBLs. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world?s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
