Get a bunch of CDs, go to the nearest Hi-Fi Center, ask if you can listen to
speakers, in YOUR price range, with your CD's, and decide!
If you can't listen in a private room, or at least in a room that's quiet
enough, go to another store!
I did that a few years ago, and I bought a pair of "linn index II (
http://www.audioshopper.com/LinnIndex.htm )" speakers with their rock base,
and I like them all; hard to position well in the room, but once it's done,
they sound sweet!
Things to ask/think when buying a speaker : ( in no order )
1- Music Type :
You need to listen to the speakers with your own music!
2- Room :
What kind of room will the speakers be installed, appartment, basement,
small, big, carpets, rugs, walls covered with books, ... Rembering that you
might listen to the store speakers in a different context!
3- Budget
How much do you want to spend, skies the limit ... but you can find
really good speakers at lower price!
4- Existing components
What's the CD player, Amp, cables, ... When I first bought my speakers,
I used cheap cables, and one was really shorter than the other one! when I
bought real speaker cables,of the same length, it sounded better!
Max.
