hellothisisalex, Last night I got my copy of the book version--very nice little package (CD size hardcover booklet with a series of manipulated photos and film stills that connect to the cover, perhaps they are included with the regular CD too?) My initial impressions upon first listen were very favourable, similar to when I first put on In a beautiful place... . Having listened to it a couple times now, I would say that I think this is a more cohesive work than Music has the right. It seems to flow better, with the short interludes being more integral to the work as a whole than before. I really here a continuation of Music has the right, but without making the album redundant. It reminds me of the kind of continuation you might hear comparing Revolver to Sgt. Pepper or Today! to Pet Sounds. The standout tracks for myself are Music is Math, Julie and Candy, 1969, Alpha and Omega, Dawn Chorus (my fave). I also seem to feel that the stronger tracks on this release seem to be stronger as a whole than on Music has the right, but they also complement the album better, without stealing too much of the spotlight from the overall album as a whole. The drum tracks on this release are more developed as well--they flow with the music better, and refuse to entirely dominate a song like they occasionally did on Music has the right. That's my opinion. cheers, Mark & Melissa hellothisisalex www.hellothisisalex.com / records.hellothisisalex.com mp3s at www.raw42.com/cgi-bin/featuredartist.pl?artist=213 mark@hellothisisalex --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've just checked that, and yep it's there ;) Pretty weird, but I've seen some other examples of, let's say, "hidden artwork": Autechre-Chiastic Slide -> the inside of the sleeve from the original vinyl version Kosmos 12" EP on Sähkö-PUU records -> the inside of the sleeve is actually the outside sleeve artwork of Jimi Tenor's Sähkömies album. Guess they had some spare sleeves lying around and just folded them inside out ;) Anyone know more examples?? I suppose I should wait six months before saying everything I'll regret later... Perhaps I can only confirm what others have mentioned: The vague hints at paranoia and evil, present in their earlier work, have become overt. The voices, in the past chattering faintly in the background, now often appear as a loud dissonant chorus, the interior monologue of a paranoid schizophrenic, something you'd hear in horror movies --the dream sequence in Rosemarie's Baby comes to my mind. And I suppose my reference to a movie about a secret devil cult isn't an accident, with the 66 min 6 sec album length. (hm...hexagons, huh? six sided? !natas liah) and at least one song title with the Devil explicitly mentioned. They've always balanced pastoral sounds with distorted ones, but the balance is now strongly tilted towards darkness, even terror. I guess I'd have to disagree strongly with the person who posted that it still sounds like happy music to him. It's really Bad Trip music. They're connecting the dots between the visionary state of psychedelic drug use, madness, the supernatural, and religion. And it's Bad. Even the use of children, to me, is reminiscent of how kids get used in horror movies -- their innocence and vulnerability makes them great foils (or conduits!) for evil. And then there's just the way children are so protected in our society, the whole idea of juxtaposing childhood with drug use creates a whole set of tensions right there... It's all so well-crafted. One of those few electronica albums with both emotive/psychological content and well realized musical ideas. I hear a lot of Beatles in there. There's a certain slow tempo thing they do that's very White Album period Beatles (itself somewhat of a bummer). And it's probably more of a coincidence than anything else, but some of the collage bits remind me a lot of Revolution #9. The hip hop beat thing -- I feel like at this point I grant it to them because they do everything else so well. It seems a bit stale to me. In a way, everything else in their music is evoking other periods of music very pointedly, the hip hop beats seem like they're there only because they've always done them. And the voicebox thing (I'm afraid I forget which gizmo it is they use -- the one that makes them sound like Cher). On the one hand, it's interesting to see them actually singing a fair amount -- that's a big change and it's surprising how organic it is to their concept. But the sound of that box is way too identifiable...I go from being lost in their musical fantasy to feeling like "oh, they're using that box." But those are just a couple quibbles. I'm surprised to like this album so much. But I do. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Singing? I don't think their voices appear on album at all. It's all samples and vocoder effects. Its not the same effects either. There are subtle but noticible differences between all of them. really? while, lots of things are clearly samples from various sources, the vocodered (etc) voices don't computer generated...sounds like it must be them forming the words. I haven't heard 'Geogaddi', but just a technical comment: it is as easy to run a sample of a human voice through a vocoder as it is to run a microphone through one. Therefore, that something has been put through a vocoder is not evidence that it is not a sample. Michael np. I *love* "Geogaddi," but maybe I feel this way because it was my first (and only) exposure to Boards of Canada. It's so out-of-tune and otherworldly and I listen to it every couple of nights to wind down from the day... I was (pleasently) surprised to see that Hi Scores is OOP (again) and is now worth GBP45, roughly. -Neil -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I wasn't. was planning on unloading my vinyl and picking up the cd and found that the only place I could find it was ebay. quite a few, but looks like they are getting quite a bit. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yes, hi scores is my favourite BOC release and maybe one of my all time favourites... but i also love "music has te right..." and "geogaddi"... also their last single has that beautiful piece "zoetrope" which i love as well... you might also try some arovane, aspen, isan, to rococo rot... keep funkin' q. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

don't get me wrong, I thought geogaddi was ok, and very much like music has the right..., its just hi scores is by far their best work, in my opinion. really worth seeking out, as 12", cd or mp3s. well worth it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think "Music has the Right to Children" is by far BOC strongest release. "Hi Scores" was a monumental debut, but it shadows in comparison in my book. I will say that Geogaddi has grown on me, although I couldn't see it being all that soothing. I find it to be much harsher, slightly sinister album on a whole. It's about as smooth as sand paper in comparison to their earlier work. I think that's why older BOC fans poo pooed it.

I agree that "maxima" and "twoism" are their best releases coz most of the track were later released on either "music has the right..." or "hi scores"... which is 2-3 years after... and if you heard all of those before "music has..." came out you'd be disappointed... coz you'd get a bunch of old traxx that you already heard... but it's hard to consider "maxima" and "twoism" as proper releases coz they came out in such small numbers... i first heard of boc when "hi scores" came out in 96 and i was blown away... and then waiting for 2 years for their new release i must say i was disappointed with "music has..." but then later i learned to love it... i think "geogaddi" is a really good album... but not one my best... and it certainly isn't bad... do you know what i mean? ;-) i love it. ;-)

:-) yes! it's a really great track.... but i'd say that "hexagon sun" is the track that describes boc music best. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
