wow... this new susumu yokota (magic thread, on leaf) is really something. i'd always thought of him as a house producer, but this album, at least, is really rich, creaking ambience with beats. maybe it's just the name, but i do feel like i hear a specifically japanese quality in the sound -- that kind of rippling, warbly timbre used by early ken ishii and current-day reflections... beautiful. Remember, that Susumu Yokota produced some amazing ambient electronic techno in the mid-90s as Ringo and Prism on the Sublime Label. Also EBI on Space Teddy. His Ringo album -Plantation has some of the finest 303 melodies in techno. Sounds like his new album sees him going full circle. i have all 3 of his Leaf releases and each is worth investigating in its own right. Probably the best for what you're looking for is "Magic Thread." This release meanders between organic ambience and clicky beats, every other track. I think it's the most consistently good of the 3. "Image" is the least rewarding overall only because it functions more as a curiosity and insight into this less housy side of Yokota but is largely a compilation of older tapes (poor quality) of ambient and/or found sound improvisations. In any case the 2 tracks on Osmosis are the best of the "Image" album IMO so you've already got them. I just got "Sakura" and haven't made it all the way through, but it appears to be somewhere in between the other two in terms of content. Less rhythmic than the alternate tracks of "Magic Thread" but not as scattered as the various "Image" tracks. hope this helps matt p.s. has anyone heard Yokota's house records? are they worth checking out?

Susumu Yokota has been getting a lot of attention the past few years for his releases on Leaf but actually he's been an active producer since back in '92-93 and has several dozen releases to his name under various guises utilizing various styles ranging from ambient to techno to house to tech-house to trance to acid to his more eclectic electronics sounds of today. The first Susumu Yokota album I bought was Sakura and I still think it's his best yet, closely followed by last year's Grinning Cat. To be honest, you can pretty much dive in anywhere as all his stuff is quality. I haven't heard his latest album yet, though I understand it's from his more house-y side. -- www.danbrusca.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Williamson" <georgewilliamson@btinternet.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 10:49 AM Subject: [idm] Susumu Yokota Hi all, I was wondering if people could suggest a good place to start with susumu yokota? While I happen to like all of Susumu's variations, there is a great deal of stylistic difference between his work as Ebi, his earlier techno stuffs, his ambient material and his latest (and quite housey) venture, "Zero". The real question is "what style are you looking for?" jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

2001 was a bit of a Susumu year for me. I bought quite a big chunk of his back catalogue but am still missing a lot -- and although Susumu is quickly becoming one of my very top favourite artists, I will probably _not_ hunt down all his albums -- not too keen on spending huge chunks of money on Japanese-only imports etc. As I bought all the following albums quite quickly, they sort of gel into one in my mind -- none of them has had time to become a firm favourite, so I just give quick pointers to what they contain. [BTW: You can buy most of these albums pretty cheaply from http://www.posteverything.com/leaf/ They even have better descriptions of them than what I provide below.] SAKURA Most ambient of them all. Sparse with each individual track built around only a couple of sounds. Nice atmospheric album that can work very well as background music, too. No strong beats; gentle rhythms. GRINNING CAT More "orchestral", with which I mean that tracks involve more sounds that are layered. Some gentle break-beats and a _lot_ of cut up melody lines played on piano, repeating endlessly which should sound irritating but doesn't. If pushed, I might name this one as my all-round favourite of the albums. WILL (Japanese-only CD) Very different from the above, all of these tracks contain housey beats but I do not think they would work particularly well in a club -- but then again what do I know? If you get to listen to this one in a shop, skip the first track as it is a generic poppy house tune with a synth riff that does not work. Rest of the album is good, though, and a couple of my favourite Yokota tracks are hidden towards the end of the album. Still, maybe not the best album to start with. MAGIC THREAD A sort of hybrid of SAKURA and WILL styles: atmosperic and sparse but with more emphasis on rhythms. This is the album I have concentrated the least on so far, so cannot really say much more. IMAGE 1983-1998 This is by far the least interesting of the releases for me but it still contains a lot to enjoy. All tracks are again sparse, based on melodies played on guitar and organ and not much else. One track contains a sample of people singing a line from the camp disco classic "I Am What I Am" which makes this album not a good choice to play while having guests, unless you enjoy ridicule. :-) In general: One of the things I most enjoy about these Yokota albums is that he makes modern sounding music that at the same time seems quite ageless. He probably uses a lot of the same sampling & cut-up techniques that many recent glitch artist without sounding gimmicky. Some of his melodies are very child-like but not in the irritating, poppy way (if that makes sense.) There's a definitely a lot of beauty to this music. Hope that helps, Timo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I love all the pretty, soft techno Yokota records as much as the rest of you, but I want to give a shout out for the crazy disco-house records that he's put out: *1998* and *1999*. As someone who bought Magic Thread and immediately decided that I wanted everything this guy has ever done, those two records were the most shocking; here I am expecting quiet and I get nailed with totally insane disco string arrangements, a monster house beat and divas screaming gibberish. Totally in-yer-face. Seriously: Yokota's hard house records are just as deep, harmonically complex and imaginative as the quiet stuff, and are a blast to kick in your car stereo. Also, by all means grab the Leaf *Remix* 12" that came out about three years ago. He reworks sounds and samples from *Image* and transforms them into angular anthems. thump thump, rr. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
