My favorite ambient artists are people like Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Alio Die, and Oöphoi. With the exception of Oöphoi, who died a couple of years ago, they're all still making great music. stephan mathieu's music is very pretty, functional in a nice to listen to way but also very detailed and has a harmonic logic that's pretty tough to crack, making it a little impersonal and not immediate but all the more interesting for it. Radioland, A Static Place and Remain are my favorites.
