I picked up Kenny Larkin's "Azimuth" album yesterday. Some of the tracks are pretty good, but the soundscape is in a very conventional Detroit style. I think it's the first time I've felt that I'm not particularly excited by the 303. Followers of the classic Detroit sound will love it, but IMHO it's too conservative and restrained. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

Morgan Geist asked about any new Kenny Larkin material... Kenny has completed a new LP for R&S, one track from it is on In Order To Dance 5. He's also going to officially kick off his Art Of Dance label with a new Dark Comedy 12", followed by a Dark Comedy LP. He's also kicking around making an ambient album ala classic Detroit/hi-tech jazz like "Tedra" DJ Orion TRiP mag Tampa, FL

I don't know if this should be out here .. but you'll all find out anyway soon enough. ***** Kenny Larkin was shot last night outside his home. 2 Men apparently were going to rob him (though they stated they were looking for someone) ... Kenny I guess got wise to the situation and came out of his house with his own gun. He missed. They didn't. He took one in the stomach, but the bullet exited and apparently did no major damage. He's doing as well as could be expected. I got this word of mouth and not from the news ... I'll update you and clarify anything I may have misinterpreted. -reverb

This was posted to alt.music.techno earlier this evening.. [begin message] Article 10869 of alt.music.techno: From: kennylark@aol.com Newsgroups: alt.music.techno Subject: people who cared about kenny larkin Date: 25 Jan 1995 00:50:40 -0500 I would like to take the time to thank everyone who called and wrote me letters wishing me a speedy recovery. It is very nice to know that even though we are doing music in an extremely congested, competetive market, that people put any and all differences aside when someone in the "techno crew" gets hurt. One thing that did bother though was the different untrue stories going around. I recently came back from Europe and I must have heard at least 10 different versions as to how I was shot. For my peers who really cares and would like to know, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!! At around midnight on Nov 14, someone knocked on my door. My girlfriend and I were in the bed at the time and were quite shocked that someone would be over that late knocking on our door. I went to the door asking who it was and the guy said "It's Charles from down the street", I did not and do not know anyone by that name so I went back to my room to get a gun I had ironically just purchased two weeks prior, after I loaded the gun I went to the door and asked what he wanted and he again stated it was Charles from down the street so I looked out the window and saw this little guy standing inside my doorway, he looked pretty young and innocent so I opened my door and as soon as I did I heard someone else rushing up to my door, knowing something was about to happen, I stepped back about ten feet in complete shock with my gun down by my side, as soon as I stopped backing up a big fat guy came in my doorway and shot me, after I felt the bullet go through me, I raised my gun up to shoot back and they ran. That's it!!!!!!!! There were no words exchanged or anything. I was taking to the hospital were they removed part of my large intestines and my appendix, I was very lucky were the bullet entered and exited . It could of been a lot worse. There were stories circulating that this happened in Detroit when in fact it happened in the suburbs. There were stories also circulating that it was a drug hit, people who know me know that I've never tried any drugs(except for weed one time in the eighth grade) and I don't drink. Select magazine wrote that I was shot because someone had a personal vendetta against me, people who know me know I am the easiest, sqauarest, down to earth brotha on the planet, I have no enemies. Even though those guys were not caught, I know of only a few possible reasons. Robbery or mistaken identity. In the house where I was shot I built up a very nice 24 Track digital studio (Alesis Adats) with all of the toys that totalled up to a very large sum of money. Someone that knew me told someone else either in passing or on purpose that I had this studio. This is why I bought the gun two weeks before the shooting, with all my studio gear in the house I got nerveous and fearfull of someone trying to rob me or , God forbid, break in while I was away in Europe and do harm to my girlfriend who lives with me. It is very hard for me to imagine that there are some people who will take your life over a f**cking keyboard. I use to say to Carl Craig "Move away from Detroit out here where it is safer and more pleasant", but now I can never say that to him again. I moved now and have to make a conscious effort to deal with only people I completely trust because you just don't know about people these days. That gun I bought saved my life and it is sad to say that I feel that I must have a gun in my house and studio to protect me and my family I never wanted to live that way but now I have no choice. Be careful who you deal with. Kenny Larkin Art of Dance Records phone 810 5488051 fax 810548 6172 [end message] :: Alan M. The only vox are some French dialogue in one track. Very good stuff - deep Detroit on the melodic, smooth (think older Beltran) side of the street. Hovers between melodic techno and sometimes quasi downtempo - lush and worthy. Not at all a slamming affair. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
